HR as Strategic Performance Partners:
Six Keys for Creating a New, Heroic Role

Offshore Outsourcing: Riding the Perfect Storm
as an HR Practitioner
Presented by: Jonathan Ward, US Managing Partner of The Global Effectiveness Group and International Director of the Va. Council of SHRM

The North American Free Trade Agreement, the growth of high-speed communications, and the increased globalization of the world s economies have combined to create a perfect storm of controversy. Faced with a need to reduce costs while maintaining high levels of customer service, companies in nearly every sector of the economy are moving jobs overseas. Customer satisfaction and shareholder value remain high, but the effects are often devastating on local communities who have seen the majority of their economic base disappear.

In this meeting, we will explore offshore outsourcing from the point of view of the company, the US company and economy, and the new host country. We will focus on the roles and responsibilities of the HR practitioner in the offshoring process, and explore the moral and ethical dilemmas that the HR department experiences as a company considers and implements offshoring. The session will conclude with opportunities for group discussion.

About the speaker:

Jonathan Ward is the US Managing Partner of The Global Effectiveness Group, an international consortium of organizational development consultants and leadership coaches. Jonathan works with global organizations to increase the effectiveness of their leaders, teams, and organizational processes in international settings.

Jonathan is International Director of the Virginia Council of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Jonathan serves on the faculties of the University of Phoenix and Leadership Fairfax, Inc. He is also a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF). Jonathan holds a certificate in Leadership Coaching from Georgetown University, a Masters Degree in Systems Management from the University of Denver, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Jonathan has worked with clients including Nextel, Intelsat, Rolls-Royce, the US Patent and Trademark Office, McCormick Spice, The Boeing Company, AARP, Saudi ARAMCO, AT&T, the US Department of Health and Human Services, NASA, and Computer Sciences Corporation. He served on the staffs of the CIO of Capital One and the President/COO and several senior vice presidents at Freddie Mac.

Jonathan is the President of the GRAMMY-winning arts organization, The Washington Chorus, with whom he has performed as a baritone soloist at the John F. Economic Development Resources
for HR Professionals
Department of Business Assistance Services
The Regional Economic Development Partnership

The Virginia Department of Business Assistance is the economic development agency devoted to the growth and success of the Commonwealth's business community. Established by the Virginia General Assembly in July 1996, the Department of Business Assistance rounds out our state's economic development program by ensuring that businesses not only find Virginia an excellent place to locate, but also an ideal place to grow, expand, and make additional investments.

The agency carries out its mission through its programs and services, which include the following resources:
· Access to capital,
· Small business counseling,
· Workforce training, and
· Pro-active business problem solving.

Founded in 1983, the Roanoke Valley Economic Development Partnership is the industrial marketing and recruitment agency for the region. It was established as a partnership of five area governments and the business community in an effort to strengthen the region’s ability to attract business locations and expansions. Previously, that responsibility had been spread among the five localities and four chambers of commerce. In 1990, Franklin and Craig counties joined the Partnership, further broadening the effort. The RVEDP is an initial point of contact for companies needing information on business expansion, relocation and development

Both the Virginia Department of Business Assistance and the Roanoke Valley Economic Development Partnership can be valuable resources for you as you seek to improve and expand your business.

Topic: Building the Character of the Future Workforce
Presenters: Representatives from the Roanoke Valley Character Coalition

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

1. Of new, first time employees in the Roanoke Valley who were terminated from their jobs, more than 60% were terminated because of character issues?

2. A very recent survey of nearly 700 businesses in the Roanoke Valley shows that the most requested workplace skill is ethics?

"Virginia law has required all schools to teach character since the fall of 2000. This law requires a character curriculum that includes a focus on Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship, referred to as the Six Pillars.

We cannot do this JUST in the schools. All members of our community, including businesses like yours, need to be involved in order for this message to have a consistent impact. Companies that wish to be recognized as an organization of good character can participate in CAP.

An organization's willingness to have their employees assess their workplace environment in relationship to the Six Pillars, entitles them to be recognized by Valley Character as a company where good character is an important part of how they do business and this help to set the right example for our youth.

Learn what Valley Character www.valleycharacter.org is doing and plans to do about this, about their Ethics in the Workplace program for high school seniors and about CAP - and the pilot programs at Advance Auto Parts - Graham White and First Freedom.

For more info - please go to their website at www.valleycharacter.org and click on "About Valley Character" and then "Committees" and then "Business".

Capitalizing on the Impending Labor Crisis

Most business executives in the US today are in big trouble and they don’t have a clue what’s about to hit them. A high percentage of employees are unhappy and ready to bolt?as soon as they feel the time is right. Many companies have at least one job opening that they are having trouble filling. Already there are some skilled labor shortages, “pockets of the labor crisis” we see today by geography, by industry, and (most especially) by occupation. When the economy turns around, and we know it will, we will again experience the massive skilled labor shortages we had in the beginning of the decade, only this time, it will be much worse! It will make the late 90s seem like a practice session. The unemployment rate in Roanoke is a low 3.1% and is expected to go lower. Are you ready? There are some specific actions you can take now to insure that your company won’t become extinct. This is certainly one program that you can’t afford to miss.

Our Speaker:
Joyce Gioia, CMC. Strategic Business Futurist and Certified Management Consultant Gioia (joy-yah) has helped hundreds of clients create a more stable workforce, including companies like American Honda, MetLife, University HealthSystem Consortium, Procter & Gamble, and AT&T. Using her guidance, one of her clients reduced their turnover from over 300% to under 25% in less than 5 months! Featured regularly in national media like Industry Week, Inc., The Christian Science Monitor, Business Week, Entrepreneur and numerous trade journals, Gioia is also co-author of five books, including the popular business books Impending Crisis: Too Many Jobs, Too Few People and How to Become an Employer of Choice, both of which have appeared on the CEO-READ Business Bestseller List.
