FREEDOM
OF EXPRESSION IN THE WORKPLACE
By: Clinton S. Morse
LeClair Ryan Flippin Densmore
(LeClair
Ryan Flippin Densmore is also our luncheon sponsor
and will be exhibiting at the meeting)
Start
the new year with a terrific program which has been presented
at the 2005 State SHRM Conference and at numerous area SHRM
meetings. Learn about some surprising freedom of speech rights
that employees have under the NLRA and freedom of expression
rights protected by Title VII. Employee expressions of their
religious views, their choice of attire and appearance and their
desire to speak foreign languages can often conflict with orderly
business operations and it is important to know the proper response.

Understanding
Virginia’s New Career
Readiness Certificate
By Dr. Barbara Bolin, Special Advisor to the
Governor for Workforce Development
Employers
know that the costs of hiring, training, and retention significantly
affect their bottom line. The cost of making a good hire is
high; the cost of making a bad hire is even greater! Virginia’s
Career Readiness Certificate was created to assist employers
by certifying that a recipient possesses competency skills in
Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information, and Locating Information
that are required by more than 85% of all jobs in the country.
The Career Readiness Certificate certifies that job seekers
have the core employability skills required across multiple
industries and occupations. It is a portable credential that
promotes career development and skill attainment for the individual,
and confirms to employers that an individual possesses basic
workplace skills in reading, math, and locating information
- skills that all jobs require. In today’s world, where
jobs and capital are more mobile than at any other time in human
history, this Certificate will facilitate job placement, retention
and advancement in Virginia.

This
dynamic session includes information from many of Fortune’s
100 Best Companies and their proven practices, which have paved

We will analyze the common denominators among America’s
best that have the greatest impact on employee morale such as
internal hiring, employee referral programs, and how to give
your new employee the “red carpet” treatment. We
will present innovative ways to improve your exit interview
process and how to regularly gauge employee needs and morale
as they apply to the four generations currently in today’s
workforce.
There will also be thorough discussion on whether employees

Power,
Polictics and Influence
What They Don't Teach You In Business School
Presented by National Speaker:
Ms. Margaret Morford
Accomplishing
the goals and objectives of any organization requires more than
just smart employees who work hard. It requires savvy employees
who know how to forge alliances and avoid animosities in order
to be effective. Participaints identify which of the rules of
"positive politics" they are most likely to violate
and obtain guidelines for their own conduct and for managing
relationships with co-workers and their own manager. They learn
how to avoid policital pitfalls in business communication, both
oral and written and how to recognize who really holds power
and has influence in an organization.

Eldercare. How Does it Affect Our Company?
A focus on impact and solutions
By: Frank
Rogan of the United Way of Roanoke Valley
Twenty-five
years ago, businesses were faced with a call for change to accommodate
the needs of workers with young children. Today, our rapidly
aging population presents companies with a new call for change—policies
and benefits to address the needs of workers who are providing
eldercare.
With
the Roanoke Valley aging population growing faster than even
the rapid growth experienced nationally, a partnership has formed
to address related challenges. The Roanoke Partnership for Employed
Caregivers is a collaborative initiative between the public,
private and non-profit sectors in the Roanoke Valley to address
the challenges of eldercare and the workplace. The Partnership
is encouraging companies to become eldercare friendly in order
to:
•
Reduce the negative impact of caregiving on their bottom-line;
• Find it easier to attract and retain the best workers;
• Increase productivity by reducing stress on employees;
• Reduce disruptions in the work schedule; and
• Enhance their community image, which can attract new
customers.
Employed
caregivers do not have to go it alone and companies do not have
to lose valuable employees, time and money. There are a variety
of benefits that an employer can offer that can provide positive
results for both employers and employees. This session promises
to be educational and enlightening and may prove to be a significant
money saver for your company. Don’t miss this one.
