“Unexpected Lessons”
A Case Study in Outsourcing at Best Western International
Dennis Myers
Pinnacle Services, LLC

Dennis Myers, President of Pinnacle Services, L.L.C and former Director of HR for Best Western International, will present a case study discussion of an outsourcing project for which he was the HR project leader while at Best Western International in Phoenix, Arizona.

While there were many important lessons learned, there was one critical issue that he and his team discovered: There are no readily available resources for the internal, or “outsourcer”, HR team. There were a lot of lessons in managing relationships, communication, the press, cultural conflicts and a multitude of details that come with such a business change.

To make things more complex, Best Western International’s decision to outsource was actually three simultaneous initiatives, with three different vendors and three different project timelines. The project was launched nine months of the original plan and impacted 40% of employees at BWI’s corporate headquarters.

What Dennis and his team thought was a nightmare – and felt like for some time – turned out to be a great learning experience. Dennis says, “It’s was a pretty unique moment in my career when I found myself recommending to my CEO that my job was one that should be cut. It builds character, but I want to keep in the ‘do not repeat’ box.”

What Makes a Great Place to Work®?
Ms. Connie Roy-Czyzowski
Vice President of Human Resources for Northeast Delta Dental

At the heart of the definition of a great place to work - a place where employees "trust the people they work for, have pride in what they do, and enjoy the people they work with" - is the idea that a great workplace is measured by the quality of the three, interconnected relationships that exist there:

The relationship between employees and management.
The relationship between employees and their jobs/company.
The relationship between employees and other employees.

Roanoke Valley SHRM is pleased to sponsor our May speaker, Ms. Connie Roy-Czyzowski, Vice President of Human Resources for Northeast Delta Dental.

Connie has led the culture change initiative at her 200 (+/-) employee company which has resulted in their national recognition as a Great Place to Work, several years in a row. As competition becomes tougher to recruit and retain talent, organizations who distinguish themselves as a Great Place to Work will have an edge. Please join us on Tuesday, May 23, as Connie describes some of Northeast Delta Dental's best practices. We will also hear more about the Great Places to Work recognition endorsed by SHRM for small - medium size employers.
