"Attracting and Retaining the Young Adult
Workforce Using New Media"

Presented by Stuart Mease, City of Roanoke

Stuart MeaseHave you ever heard, “If there was only a job… Keep me in mind if you hear of anything….I cannot find talented individuals…. There are just no jobs here… I would like to return to my hometown, but I cannot find a good paying job… I sure would like for my children and grandchildren to move back here…”? Does it sound familiar?

Come hear how the City of Roanoke is spearheading efforts to bring young professionals to the Roanoke Valley as well as retaining those who are already here.

Mr. Mease earned his MBA from Virginia Tech, where he also previously served in several roles, including job placement, office of the Executive VP, government relations, and for the Presidential Fellow.

Stuart’s primary focus is “connecting people.” In 2005, he created a blog to bridge the communication gap between individuals (primarily young professionals) seeking employment opportunities in the Roanoke and New River Valleys. He also connected over 200 students to local internship opportunities through a program and course he created while in the Department of Management at Virginia Tech.

Click to view a copy of Mr. Mease's presentation in Power Point format.

Please make reservations by utilizing the on-line event reservation form or e-mailing Joy Hanson at jhanson@iamrrha.org. Please include "RVSHRM RSVP" in the subject line. Registration Deadline is Wednesday, January 16.

Presented by Scott Viette

Scott VietteCome see why IDENTITY THEFT—America’s Fastest Growing Crime, ranked as the #2 concern on SHRM’s National Study of Trends—is a REAL threat affecting 1 in 4 U.S. households and ALL employers across the nation regardless of size.
• Why should all Businesses, Corporations, Schools, Government, Financial Institutions, and Health Care be concerned about Identity Theft, FACTA, HIPAA, and GLB?
• What is Identity Theft? How does this devastating crime occur? Why are HR Managers, Executives, and Employers at risk? What proactive measures and “Affirmative Defense” steps should we be taking to protect our company, its employees, and its clients?

Prior to the last 8 years with Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc., Mr. Viette worked 5 years with a national utility company as Vice President of Field Operations and Business Development for the US and in various executive management capacities with a division of Sara Lee Corporation for 12 years.

“HR Strategies for the New Millennium”
Presented by Steven A. Miranda, SPHR, GPHR
Chief Human Resource and Strategic Planning Officer for SHRM

While the “7 Deadly Sins” for mere mortals are easy to spot, the “7 Deadly Sins” for the HR strategist are not always as easily identified. And, whether we like it or not, HR is in the risk management business. Successful HR strategists, therefore, must manage risk by avoiding these seven pitfalls while navigating a fast-changing global environment. The presentation discusses the various facets and considerations involved with thinking strategically, taking a position of advocacy, forming an opinion, understanding the business, being a change agent, and being flexible.

There will also be time for open discussion/questions about SHRM following the presentation.

About the speaker...

Prior to taking this role, Steve ran his own business and created HR initiatives and programs targeted at improving global organizational effectiveness at a variety of companies. • The potential impact of the 2008 Elections on the labor relations climate in the U.S.
  • New cases from the U.S. Supreme Court and courts in Virginia in the discrimination arena.
