President's Message by Donna Tatum

It's still early in 2010 and we're already breaking records; snowfall records that is. I know everyone is ready for spring but the groundhog saw his shadow (he wasn't in Roanoke that day) so they said "its six more weeks of winter".
Roanoke Valley SHRM is off to a great start this year with a wonderful program in January from Barbara Robertson, Director of Operations for Cox Communication. Barbara's Power Point will be on our website for your convenience.
Your Board is busy planning for this year's events, training, workforce education, community charitable involvement and opportunities to increase awareness of HR professionals. Marie Greer, our Chapter's Charity liaison orchestrated a successful coat drive for The Ram House during the January meeting. Keep a check on our website for more opportunities to support our community as we move forward this year. Thank you to all who were able to participate with donations.
There is still a need for volunteers on committees. Volunteering is not just giving of your time it is giving of your knowledge and your ideas to create a stronger Chapter. Our Chapter is full of leaders and individuals who are on the forefront of "change" in their company's everyday; please consider volunteering. Contact me or any Board member for opportunities to help.
Join us on February 23rd as we welcome Christopher Rogone owner of Executive Security Concepts who will speak to us about workplace safety. We will then welcome our key speaker Jeff Smith, Professional Certified Coach with The Titan Group who will provide an overview of coaching and why leaders should care about this critical competence.
Until then.....be a giver because it feels good for both parties, because it's a joy to light up someone's life, even momentarily, and the returns will naturally come back to you.
Thank you,
Donna Tatum
2009/2010 RVSHRM President

Formal mentoring programs can create substantive change in diversity strategy
Employees are drawn to an organization that can accelerate learning, bridge knowledge and gaps and increase competency levels.
As organizations compete for diverse talent, they must identify tools and strategies that will support brand recognition and differentiation. A mentoring program can be a "difference maker" when attracting talent. Employees today want to progress, learn and contribute as much s possible, as fast as possible. Potential employees are drawn to an organization that can demonstrate how it will accelerate learning, bridge knowledge gapes and increase competency levels. A customized mentoring program can deliver on those promises. Some industries such as the federal government have very little, if any, pay differential in jobs at the same level. Therefore, a mentoring program that offers to support employee performance and help employees achieve their career goals can be distinguishing feature to attract the best talent.

| RVSHRM COAT DRIVE FOR THE RAM HOUSE! |
|
Many thanks to everyone for your generosity during our January Coat Drive for Roanoke Area Ministries. I am pleased to report that we collected 161 coats!! The folks at RAM are thrilled and so am I. Your response to the needs in our local community will make a real difference in the lives of the Roanoke Valley residents served by RAM. As we move into 2010, we will focus on doing more as a chapter to give back into our community. Look for upcoming events and opportunities to give and serve in the coming months. Thanks again for your generosity!
