Defining, Communicating and Living Your Company Culture
Presented By: Tammy Finley, VP Team Member Relations for Advance Auto Parts
Sometimes understanding the impact that HR can have on an organization can best be illustrated from the perspective of someone who has been there! Tammy Finley will lead a discussion of how HR can facilitate the process of defining, communicating and living your company culture. She will also present a case study of how this process has worked at Fortune 500 retail company, Advance Auto Parts.
Tammy has served as Vice President, Team Member Relations for Advance Auto Parts since March 1998. Prior to this, she practiced labor and employment law with The Center for Employment Law. She also clerked for Virginia Supreme Court and attended Virginia Tech for her undergraduate degree and graduated from William & Mary law school.
Please

reservation form
or e-mailing Joyce Kessinger at jkessinger@boxley.com.

President's
Message
by
Sarah Wilson

Thank you so much for sending me to San Diego to represent this chapter at the National SHRM convention in June. As I have said before, if you have never been to a National conference you should plan to do so in 2006 when it will be held in Washington, DC from June 25-28,2006.
The opening General Session was on Sunday, Father’s Day, June 19th. Bill Cosby had clearly studied up on what Human Resources professionals do every day. His humor, wisdom, and empathy for what we do, went a long way to endear him to everyone in the room. He spoke to the crowd and encouraged them to “talk to each other, shake each other’s hands. Share the good stories, share bad stories. You don’t always have to learn from somebody behind a podium.” This same thing could be said of each and every Roanoke Valley SHRM chapter meeting. I challenge you to bring 10 business cards at least with you to each meeting, exchanging them for one from each person at your lunch table, don’t go back to your office without giving them all away. Then on Friday afternoon take 30 minutes and close your door and “network”. This advice was given by Margaret Morford who spoke to our group in April. That is what this organization is all about - you don’t have to do it alone!
As our organization moves forward with plans for the State Conference hosted by us in 2006 here in Roanoke Virginia, I urge you to get involved. There will be plenty of work to go around, but also plenty of fun and laughter. The committee chairs have been chosen, and are hard at work. The committees are:
• Conference Chair –Dan Semones – dan.semones@drs.virginia.gov
• Arrangements Chair – Joyce Kessinger –
jkessinger@boxley.com
• Program Chair- Diane Casola, Esq.- dcasola@woodsrogers.com
• Treasurer Chair- Debra Honaker – dhonaker@treadcorp.com
• Marketing Chair – Donna Tatum – donna.tatum@expresspersonnel.com
• Door Prizes – Lauren Prada and Charlotte Mason –
Lauren.prada@adeccona.com
and cmason@advantageresgroup.com
• Sponsorship Chair – Anita Hassell - ahassell@roanokecountyva.gov
• Registration Chair – Sharon Bowers –
Hamcosharon@aol.com
Please, if you have not already done so, contact one of the chairpersons and volunteer your time, energy, and creativity. All will be needed to pull off the State Conference and make it the best in the state.
Thanks to Sharon Bowers, President Elect, for filling in for me last month at the chapter meeting. See you in July!
Sarah

Minutes from Board Meeting
June 28, 2005
Hotel Roanoke 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
The following Board members were in attendance:
Debbie Honaker, Donna Moses, Dan Semones, Sandy Hamilton, Sharon Bowers, Joy Hanson, Barbara Phelps, Dan Oyler, Johna Campbell, and Matt Duffy.
Sharon Bowers, 2006 President Elect, called the meeting to order.
Motion was made by Dan Oyler and seconded by Matt Duffy to approve the
May 24, 2005, Board Minutes with the one correction of the Peer Review Program being in October instead of September. The motion was passed.
Debbie Honaker reported that she is still working with the Accountant to finalize the year-end tax filings.
Donna Moses reported 236 active members with seven new members joining since last month. Donna distributed a training program she has reviewed on the “Joint Billing” program with National SHRM. The program would align local dues with national dues, prorating the cost. There is a follow-up on non-renewals, and audit of the membership is performed each year. Donna recommended a joint call of several members to study the aspects of the program and hopefully decide by August whether this would be a good fit and be compatible with our website. Debbie Honaker and Donna Tatum will work with Donna Moses on this project.
Barbara Phelps reported the Diversity Committee had polled the membership and from the survey the following topics are suggested:
Economic Impact from Diversity
Business Reasons for Diversity
Diversity Recruiting
The Board discussed costs for speakers, and Barbara Phelps will further investigate speaker possibilities.
Dan Semones reported on the national conference. There were 12,000 people and 1,000 exhibitors at the conference. Bill Cosby was the key-note speaker. Dan recommended that the chapter purchase a display. Dan Semones and Dan Oyler will develop a table-top exhibit for the 2005 and 2006 State Conference. Dan also recommended that the 2006 State Conference offer a good but professional time, attract people, and offer things not seen before. Another planning meeting for the 2006 State Conference is scheduled for next week.
Dan Oyler presented information on the golf tournament to be held September 12, 2005. Door prizes are needed from Board members. Cost is $60 per person. Information on the golf tournament will be placed on the website. A deadline for registration needs to be on the registration form.
Johna Campbell reported that adjustments will be made to the program agenda for the rest of the year. Johna will request information on attendance from Becky Reynolds to determine if topics of programs affect attendance.
The projector purchase and succession planning were tabled until the next meeting.
There will be no raffle at today’s meeting.
Sharon Bowers announced that the Technology Committee is still seeking a chair.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandy Hamilton, Secretary

Diversity Awareness Seminar
The Shenandoah Valley SHRM is sponsoring a Diversity Awareness Seminar on
July 26th at Blue Ridge Community College in Weyers Cave and we need your
help getting the word out. We feel we have obtained a great speaker for
this event and, as you know, in order to make something successful, you have
to have attendees. At this juncture, we have less than 20 participants
signed up to attend. Sheila Washington may even be a good option for your
chapters or your companies. If you would like to also share with your
management team at your place of employment, that would be appreciated as
well. Click
here for the flyer in Adobe format. Please let me know if you
have any questions and thank you in advance for helping us spread the word!

Within 3 Years…..
Within in 3 years, women and minorities will represent 70% of the new labor force entrants.
Within 5 years:
· 35% of the U.S. workforce will be non-Caucasian,
· the 45–64 age group will increase by 29%,
· the 18–44 age group will decline by 1% in the U.S. workforce, and
· $1.5 trillion in purchasing power will be held by Hispanics, African, Asian and Native Americans.
As an HR community, we’ve been discussing changes in workforce demographics for years. Now it’s a reality. The change is no longer off in the distant future. A recent article in HR Magazine provides some realistic actions for HR and Management to take. Below are some highlights.
Our company’s success, and our success, is dependent upon solid working relationships and diverse insights that reflect the diversity of the U.S. and global populations. These insights can effectively expand our company’s customer base. Since the flow of information between employees, work teams, customers and suppliers depend on the quality of relationships, HR can assist by gaining experience in “team building, change management, conflict resolution and cross-cultural communication”. HR can provide further support by evaluating talent management, mentoring, career development and succession planning programs and policies. Also, a review of benefit plans and work schedules can show if older workers, single parents and persons with disabilities are encouraged to become and remain employees. Is phased retirement and part-time work readily available?
Management’s commitment to diversity will “make or break” diversity initiatives. Management can demonstrate their commitment thru communications, participation on related councils and implementing performance competencies and metrics. Related objectives tied to bonuses and visible senior level involvement sends the message that the company needs diversity for competitive success. Also, senior management can lead by hiring qualified persons of diversity on their staff.
Here is a list of key companies known for their diversity efforts:
Pitney Bowes – emphasis on recruitment initiatives and partnerships
Ford Motor – focuses on community relations
DuPont- uses cost and profit objectives
Quaker Oats – provides a best practices menu and accountability guidelines to each site
Kraft – uses employee councils for employee development.

Member Birthdays
See the Birthday List in the left column.
The Board thought it might be a nice idea to list member birthdays each month in the newsletter. If you see that it's a friend's birthday, feel free to send a card, make a phone call, or even bake a cake for that person! In order to start the birthday list idea, we need for all members to update their member profiles on the web site.
to go to the "Update Your Member Record" section
of the site. Your log-in is the first initial of your first name and your whole last name. The password is rvshrm. Click "Edit My Info" and your profile will pop up. Scroll down to enter your birth month and day. And, please check the accuracy of your other information as well. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Joy Hanson, Newsletter Editor, at
jhanson@rkeauthority.org
or 983-9216. Thank you.
