HR as Strategic Performance Partners: Six Keys to Creating a New, Heroic Role for HR Professionals

How does one translate senior management's strategies into easily understood and executable employee behaviors? The benefits of a strategy-to-behavior translation can be monumental, both in employee productivity and corporate profitability. Clearly, there is tremendous potential for value creation by unleashing the productivity of the most important resource of any business - its employees. Charles Breeding will discuss the difference between relevance and strategic relevance for HR leaders in their organizations. Additionally, Mr. Breeding will reveal a management assessment and process for gauging xQ or your Execution Quotient along with a process for closing gaps and providing strategic relevance.

About the Speaker: Charles Breeding is a 1978 graduate of West Point U.S. Military Academy with a BS in Engineering. After military service, he entered Dale Carnegie training, winning numerous awards and achieving much success for his organizations. Mr. Breeding is currently a Client Partner with Franklin Covey for the states of West Virginia and Virginia.

President's Message
by Charlotte Mason

Yea, it’s Spring—finally. I believe we have now survived the snow and winter months!

We are planning some exciting topics for our upcoming luncheon meetings and our Spring Fling in May that you can read more about later in the newsletter. Another event that is scheduled for May is the National American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) conference. For some of you who must wear a HR and training hat, I thought you might be interested in attending this conference. It will be held in Washington, DC on May 23-27, 2004. You can obtain more information on their web site: www.astd.org.

National SHRM has many resources available to SHRM members and SHRM chapters. The RV-SHRM chapter recently purchased a HR Role Models DVD series that showcases HR executives who demonstrate the contributions that effective HR practices can make. This DVD was developed by The SHRM Foundation. You may borrow this DVD to use for HR meetings within your company. Please contact me at 774-9705 if you wish to use the DVD.
Please remember to let your Board know of any special requests that you may have for monthly programs. We want to ensure that the programs are adding value for you as a SHRM member.

Board Meeting Minutes
by Sharon Bowers

Notes from Board Meeting
March 23, 2003

The following 2004 Board members were in attendance: Charlotte Mason, Sarah Wilson, Mike Leach, Ben Bowman, Joy Hanson, Barbara Phelps, Beth Pinson and Sharon Bowers

Topics discussed:

Charlotte Mason opened the meeting. First item of discussion was the D & O Insurance. Charlotte will check with Sherry Buckner, Treasurer, to verify that the coverage has been taken care of.

Mike Leach reported that the membership committee is working hard to contact new members. He further reviewed the new visitor form (designed by Becky Reynolds). This form will be used as a tracking and contact mechanism by the Membership Committee.

Ben Bowman provided an update on future meetings. He reported that the Spring Fling will be held at Camp Bethel this year and that Ride Solutions will be sponsoring the transportation. Ben added that the New River Valley SHRM has asked to participate again this year with our ballgame outing. The Board approved this request and also agreed to invite the chapter to our Spring Fling. There was further discussion concerning the ASTD Conference and other workshops. It was agreed to provide this information to our members through our monthly newsletter.

Charlotte Mason reviewed the position of Registered Agent for our Chapter. As we are incorporated we are required to complete an annual report from the State Corporation Commission. Todd Leeson was named the Registered Agent several years ago. The Board agreed that Todd should continue to be the Chapter’s Agent.

Charlotte Mason reported that there are several organizations throughout the Valley that have requested the Chapter’s assistance in communicating their needs, etc. The Board agreed to provide this information to our members through the monthly newsletter and possibly add a link to their web sites. Recently, Valley Character Group has requested our assistance. Beth Pinson, Workforce Readiness, will contact them.

Charlotte Mason reported that the SHRM HR Role Model DVD Video is in and available to our members. She will communicate the procedure for borrowing the video through the monthly newsletter. Charlotte added that she has been contacted by National College of Business and Technology for our assistance in starting a Student Chapter. She will call the college and report back to the Board.

Beth Pinson thanked the Board for allowing the students from Patrick Henry to attend the luncheon.

The Roanoke Chapter Sponsors Memberships

In 2004, the Roanoke Chapter will sponsor memberships for several HR Professionals whose employers do not fund their National and Local SHRM memberships. Through these one-year memberships, the Chapter hopes to better serve the community and to reach persons engaged daily in the field of HR who may not currently be participating in the either organization.

Recipients of the Chapter-sponsored memberships will be expected to pay their own fees for the Chapter’s monthly luncheons and other events. They will not be identified to Chapter members as recipients of sponsored memberships.

Persons interested in applying for the one-year membership should submit the following items as soon as possible:

· Letter of interest, describing their current position and the
benefits they hope to receive from National and Local
  SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer that includes
confirmation their memberships will not be employer-paid.

If you’re interested, please contact Barbara Phelps, Matt Duffy, or Debra Lovelace. Funds available for this new program are limited, so you are encouraged to act promptly to ensure your request is fully considered.
