President’s Message
April 2006
Happy spring! Isn’t it nice to see the beautiful
flowers and feel the warm air?! Besides the
sneezing, I love this time of the year. It’s
also the time to do our “spring cleaning”…oh,
joy! Time to clean out the clutter and refresh
for the new season. This is not always easy to
do, especially if you are an HR professional.
The pressure to deliver faster, stay of top of
ever changing regulations and in-office rules,
fill those empty positions and all the while,
keep smiling! Whew, makes me tired thinking
about it! But, somehow, we make it all come
together and we do keep smiling. Take time to
clean out the old and make room for the new.
Manage your time by being aware of what your
goals are. This will help you prioritize your
activities and will allow to create a schedule
that works for you. Also, don’t forget there are
so many tools and helpful ideas on the SHRM
website. As I said earlier this year, you do not
have to reinvent the wheel!
Special thanks to Dennis Myers, President of
Pinnacle Services, L.L.C. for sharing his
experience with the outsourcing project while
employed by Best Western International. We can
appreciate his “lessons” and learn from his
outline of what to do, as well as, what not to
do.
Alright, don’t forget to mark those calendars
for next meeting and remember to register for
the State Conference if you have not already.
Look forward to seeing you on the 25th!
Respectfully,
Sharon Bowers

Barbara Phelps to approve the February 28,
2006, Board Minutes. The motion was carried.
Sharon Bowers announced that the chapter had
achieved the Superior Merit Award for 2005.
Sharon Bowers reported for Debbie Reid of
the Diversity Committee that an interactive
program will be featured at the November
meeting. Board Members were asked for
suggestions on recruiting members to
increase our diversity. Personal invitations
are recommended.
Dan Semones reported that the next meeting
of the State Conference Committee will be
held April 15th at Jersey Lily’s. Six
students have registered to assist with the
Conference.
We will broadcast e-mail the Virginia Relay
System to be held April 11th.
A check for $500 will be given to Jr.
Achievement. Lauren Prada will present this
check at a future meeting.
The Management Association has contacted
Sharon Bowers to participate in their 2006
wage and salary survey. Cost to members will
be $345. The Management Association is a
not-for-profit organization.
Board Members were reminded to contact David
Wolfe on website changes and corrections.
The 2004 Member Directory that appears at
the top of the Home Page is inaccurate and
will be removed.
The Board Members discussed guidelines for
co-sponsoring seminars, meetings, etc.
Guidelines discussed were:
1. Topics must be HR related or related to growth in the HR
field.
2. Link will be established for listing seminars, meetings,
etc. A $50 fee will be charged to the
sponsor of the seminar, meeting, etc. for
that link. A waiver of the fee for
non-profits will be considered.
3. If membership gets a discount, we will broadcast the
seminar, meeting, etc. and the $50 fee will
be waived.
4. Seminars, meetings, etc. sponsored by RVSHRM committees
will be referred to Sharon Bowers for
approval and broadcast.
Dan Smith, Editor of the Blue Ridge Journal,
contacted Sharon Bowers about their “Best
Places to Work Award.” He would like RVSHRM
to identify companies who would qualify for
this award and broadcast information about
the award to our members.
Sharon Bowers announced that the State SHRM
survey for demographic profiles of our
members will be broadcasted to the
membership.
Donna Moses noted that the member-at-large
list should be taken care of with joint
billing. Donna announced that we have 230
renewals (88% of last year’s membership).
Lists of non-renewals were distributed to
Board Members.
Lauren Prada will announce at today’s
meeting the Parents Anti-Drug meeting to be
held March 30th, 7:00 p.m., Hidden Valley

“Unexpected
Lessons”
A Case Study in Outsourcing at Best Western
International
Dennis Myers, of
the Pinnacle Services LLC., was the presenter at
the March Meeting. His topic covered lessons
learned from participating in the outsourcing of
his entire human resources department at Best
Western headquarters. It was a tale that you
wouldn't wish on your worst enemy, but it was
also a recipe - when life gives you a lemon,
make lemonade."
