"How Business Can Prepare for the Flu Pandemic"
Presented by Hetzal Hartley, MD, MPH.
Medical Director, Carilion Occupational Medicine
Medical Director, Carilion Employee Health

If an epidemic from any cause spreads across the country, all businesses will be impacted. With proper preparation, training and flexibility many companies will be able to ride-out the storm with minimal damage. Dr. Hartley will discuss the current concern with a possible influenza pandemic, past pandemics, and current preparations for a future avian flu pandemic.

About our Speaker:
As Chairman of the Carilion Pandemic Influenza Planning Taskforce, Dr. Hetzel Hartley is assisting in the development of a comprehensive plan to maintain Carilion's ability to continue to provide healthcare to communities in Southwest Virginia in the event of pandemic. The goals of the organization are to protect the lives and health of their 10,000 employees while continuing medical operations as normally as possible.

Dr. Hartley completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Wake Forest University. After ten years working in a Trauma Center, he shifted his focus to Occupational and Environmental Medicine. As an Air Force reserve flight surgeon he was involved in numerous military operations over the past twenty years including the invasion of Panama, humanitarian missions to Haiti, and Honduras, as well as the 1991 Gulf War, and the Global war on terror in Afghanistan and Iraq. He has been involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of numerous civilian and military disaster and medical relief operations. These have been both exercises and real world disasters.

Please make reservations by utilizing the on-line event reservation form or e-mailing Joy Hanson at jhanson@iamrrha.org. Please include "RVSHRM RSVP" in the subject line. Registration Deadline is Wednesday, April 18th.

President's Message
by Barbara Phelps

Congratulations! We recently received notification from SHRM National that the Roanoke Valley SHRM has once again earned the Superior Merit Award. By achieving this award our chapter distinguishes itself as a superior organization dedicated to the professional advancement of our members and the advancement of the human resources management profession. This award is based upon our Chapter Activity Plan (CAP) that is completed each year by the Board of Directors. The Chapter Activity Plan consists of four major categories: chapter operations, professional development of members, promotion of the profession and SHRM in partnerships. We, as a chapter, must meet certain criteria and goals for each category, and then SHRM National scores our activities and award points. Thanks to you, our Board of Directors and members, for helping us reach and exceed our goals. This is a great reflection on our chapter.

We would like to thank Mike Aamodt who presented “The Art & Science of Structured Interviewing” in our March meeting and thanks to AFLAC for sponsoring the meeting.

Special thanks to Todd Leeson, our Legislative representative, who attended the Legislative Conference in Washington DC on behalf of our chapter. Todd will keep us informed on legislative affairs and updates monthly.

Please welcome our two new board members, Michelle Glynn – Student Chapter and Jamie Martis – Newsletter Chair.
