President's Message
by Charlotte Mason

On July 23, 2004, Sarah Wilson and I attended the Virginia SHRM State Council meeting in Danville. I would like to share some of the information with you that we learned at the meeting.

It was formally announced that the Virginia SHRM State Council has a web site. Please take a few minutes to review the information on this web site at www.shrmva.org. The web site will provide you with contact information to the Va. State Council membership, The State Council’s Vision, Mission and Yearly Goals and Objectives, the ability to post HR employment and internship opportunities, direct links to all SHRM chapters and districts throughout Virginia, new marketing and advertising opportunities for your organization, access to the State Council newsletter and the Virginia State Conference link.

We also learned from our SHRM Regional Manager, Shelly Prochaska, that any national SHRM member who has been downsized can receive a free one-year membership in SHRM. The individual must be a national SHRM member in good standing at the time of the downsizing.

Don’t forget to register for the upcoming State SHRM Conference to be held on October 6-8, 2004 in Richmond, Virginia. Here is the link to information on the conference: http://www.rhrma.org/conference/ To receive the discount registration fee of $295, you must register by August 15th.

If you currently have your PHR or SPHR certification and wish you had an easier way to track the education and training requirements needed for recertification, the HRCI web site will soon have a section where you can enter your information. This will make the completion of the form much easier at the time of recertification.

Board Meeting Minutes
by Sharon Bowers

July 27, 2004

The following 2004 Board members were in attendance: Charlotte Mason, Sarah Wilson, Dan Oyler, Ben Bowman, Dan Semones, Sharon Bowers, Barbara Phelps, Tom Engl, Joy Hanson, Mike Leach and Matt Duffy.

Topics discussed:

Charlotte Mason opened the meeting. First item of discussion was the resignation of Laura Brewer, Student Chapter Chairperson. Charlotte asked the board for recommendations and will contact those people that were suggested.

Mike Leach reported that, to date, our membership stands at 256. 91% have been identified as national members (which is a requirement of our local society).

Sherry Buckner was not able to attend the meeting so Mike Leach reported for her. To streamline the invoicing process for those members that ask to be invoiced for the luncheon meetings, she has created a form that will be available at the registration desk.

Charlotte Mason and Sarah Wilson asked each board member to be thinking of someone to chair the 2006 State Conference. Charlotte also asked for suggestions for the 2005 Officer Nominating Committee.

Dan Oyler is working on the Chapter’s By-Laws and will have a report available to the board by the August meeting.

Charlotte Mason reported that we should consider having someone on the board to represent the SHRM Foundation. She and Sarah Wilson learned at the State Council Meeting that our Chapter could obtain points by having a representative and also by having at least one fund-raising activity during the year. A 50/50 raffle was suggested. Mike Leach asked that a job description be sent to each board member. Recommendations will be reviewed during the August board meeting.

Ben Bowman reported that the speaker he had planned for the September meeting would not be available. Several recommendations were made. Ben will review.

Matt Duffy asked for approval to purchase a battery charger for the Chapter’s camera. The board approved the request.

Announcements

Superior Merit Award for 2003

If you missed our last two meetings, you may have missed the announcement that our Roanoke Valley Chapter won the Superior Merit Award for 2003. We recently received this announcement from national SHRM. We also received a banner as a part of the Superior Merit Award that will be displayed at each meeting.

To apply for the Superior Merit Award, the chapter completes a SHRM Chapter Achievement Plan at the end of the year. Information on activities of the chapter is submitted in the following categories: Legislative and Community Support, Chapter Operations, Professional Development, and Advance the Profession. If information contained in the plan meets each of the following requirements, the chapter receives the Superior Merit Award: Completion of at least 75 achievements, verification of proper use of “AFFILIATE OF” SHRM logo, have a membership where 30% of total members are national SHRM members (our chapter requires 100%), and chapter president or designee attended a minimum of 50% of state council meetings. We have already started the process of compiling the information so we will be ready to submit the report at the end of this year to win the Superior Merit Award for 2004.

I would like to say a special thank you to Mike Leach for doing a great job compiling the information on this report for our chapter to win the Superior Merit Award.

The Virginia Business Leadership Network (VABLN) Presents:
The Accommodation Process

Event: What do we do when an employee requests an accommodation to do their job? Is there a policy or process in place to address the employee’s request? This is an issue faced by many Human Resource professionals, managers, and supervisors. A consultant from the Job Accommodation Network, leaders in assisting businesses with their accommodation needs, will lead this interactive workshop. In this session, employers will learn how to utilize the Job Accommodation Network’s "Accommodation Process," a 5-step tool to use when implementing accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities. This process is applicable to any person with a disability in any job field, and can be used to help solve even the most tricky accommodation scenarios.

When: Wednesday, September 15, 2004
8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Where: SunTrust Bank, Red and Green Room, 10 Franklin Road, Roanoke, Va

How: Attendance is free, compliments of the Virginia Business Leadership Network but you must register to attend. Please visit our website at http://www.vabln.org to register. For further information please contact Dana Rosanelli at dana.rosanelli@suntrust.com or 804-782-7181.

The Virginia Business Leadership Network is a business led coalition dedicated to increasing workforce and marketplace diversity to include people with disabilities.

This program has been approved for 3 recertification credit hours toward PHR and SPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).

This activity is sponsored in part through Federal Developmental Disabilities Grant Funding administered by the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities, 202 N. 9th Street, 9th Fl, Richmond, VA 23219.

The Roanoke Chapter Sponsors Memberships

In 2004, the Roanoke Chapter will sponsor memberships for several HR Professionals whose employers do not fund their National and Local SHRM memberships. Through these one-year memberships, the Chapter hopes to better serve the community and to reach persons engaged daily in the field of HR who may not currently be participating in the either organization.

Recipients of the Chapter-sponsored memberships will be expected to pay their own fees for the Chapter’s monthly luncheons and other events. They will not be identified to Chapter members as recipients of sponsored memberships.

Persons interested in applying for the one-year membership should submit the following items as soon as possible:

· Letter of interest, describing their current position and the
benefits they hope to receive from National and Local
  SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer that includes
confirmation their memberships will not be employer-paid.

If you’re interested, please contact Barbara Phelps, Matt Duffy, or Debra Lovelace. Funds available for this new program are limited, so you are encouraged to act promptly to ensure your request is fully considered.
