President's Message
by Sarah Wilson

7 - 5 - 3

Do you know the importance of these three numbers? Well if you were at the July meeting of the RVSHRM then you know that these numbers are important to the culture at Advance Auto Parts. A big thank you goes to Tammy Finley, VP of Team Member Relations for Advance Auto Parts and a long time member of this chapter for sharing her insight on creating a company culture. It was thought provoking and gave me some nuts and bolts to take back to my own organization.

On July 29th, Dan Semones, Joyce Kessinger, Kathy Claytor and myself attended the quarterly State Council meeting held in one of the skyboxes at Virginia Tech. A couple of announcements were made that you may be interested in if you are attending the State Conference in Virginia Beach in September. On Friday, September 23, 2005, Busch Gardens will open its gates at 2pm to Human Resources Professionals for free for themselves and one guest. Coy Renick, President of the Virginia State Council will be in touch with more details in the near future. Also on Saturday, September 24, 2005 there will be a Captain’s Choice Golf Tournament. So if you play golf and are going to Virginia Beach early you might want to log onto the web site www.hrshrm.org/state_conference.htm or contact Coy Renick for details. Jim Cowan, Attorney with LeClair Ryan Flippin and Densmore spoke to the group regarding FLSA, and gave us a Legislative Update. He reminded us that we needed to include “Safe Harbor” language in our handbooks and put it in the hands of all of our employees. Since I am in the middle of revising my employee handbook, this was timely information for me. If you would like a sample policy, contact me and I will see that you get a copy.

I was getting ready for work this morning (Tuesday, August 2, 2005) and had CNN News on the television and heard a five minute segment entitled “ Why we Hate HR: Friend or Foe”. The guest was Mark Vamos, speaking of an article he had written for Fast Company Magazine. The segment on CNN was not very complimentary and made me think there was more to the article than just that short segment, so I decided to head to Barnes and Noble after work and pick up a copy of the magazine. It is the cover story for August 2005. I would be interested in feedback from my colleagues on this article. Also all of you Marcus Buckingham fans might be interested to know that he is the new columnist for this same magazine. E-mail me at swilson@richfieldretirement.com if you read the article and want to share your thoughts.

The CEO Breakfast will be our meeting in August. Don’t be shy - ask your boss to join us at the Hotel Roanoke on August 23rd. See you there!

Board Meeting Minutes
by Sandy Hamilton

Minutes from Board Meeting
July 26, 2005
Hotel Roanoke 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

The following Board members were in attendance:
Dan Oyler, Debbie Honaker, Donna Moses, Sarah Wilson, Sharon Bowers, Sandy Hamilton, Kathy Claytor, Joe Farmer (substituting for Donna Tatum), Joyce Kessinger, Joy Hanson, Johna Campbell, Barbara Phelps, and Dan Semones.

Sarah Wilson, 2005 President, called the meeting to order.

Motion was made by Sharon Bowers and seconded by Dan Oyler to approve the June 28, 2005, Board Minutes. Motion was carried.

Debbie Honaker recommended that someone be assigned to the Quick Book Accounting Project to install, set up accounts and train her. After much discussion, motion was made by Sharon Bowers and seconded by Dan Oyler that Kathy Claytor attempt to secure an intern from Roanoke College to conduct this Quick Book Accounting Project. The motion was carried. Debbie also noted that the chapter’s taxes have been filed.

Joyce Kessinger reported 62 members registered for today’s meeting. The CEO breakfast will be held in August and the September meeting will be held September 20th. Debbie Honaker and Joyce will revisit changing the price of the meeting in order to meet increased expenses.

Johna Campbell reported that CEO Breakfast invitations have not been mailed. After discussion, it was decided that Donna Moses would e-mail a list of the membership to Johna and she will mail an invitation to the senior member of each company with a request to forward the invitation to his/her CEO. Johna also announced plans for a Christmas Silent Auction to be held in December after 5:00 p.m. Invitations will be made to members’ spouses/significant other. Donna Tatum will be working with Johna to secure auction items.

Joe Farmer reported that Donna Tatum is meeting August 4th with TPS to secure ideas for the RVSHRM exhibit/display. He also reminded Board members that the Job Market is requesting articles from our membership.

Dan Semones reported exhibit/display will be available for the 2005 State Conference. PDA will be given as a door prize at the conference. Joyce Kessinger reminded Dan that she has O. Winston Link Museum information which could be used at the conference. The next planning meeting is August 11th. Four hundred people have already registered for the 2005 Conference. Motion was made by Dan Oyler and seconded by Sharon Bowers to pay Dan Semones’ expenses to the 2005 State Conference. The motion was carried.

50/50 raffle will be held today to support the National SHRM Foundation.

Donna Moses reported 241 members with three new members since last month. She reported that the joint billing conference call was held. Application would be made to National but would not download to our website. Donna has checked with Patti Dunbar to see if the website will accept an Excel spreadsheet that has the membership information. National does not accept credit card payments and bills in October for January. National cannot get us onboard for the October 2005 billing. The next step is for National to see if we are a fit for them. Motion was made by Sharon Bowers and seconded by Dan Oyler to have National perform the investigation on our membership. Motion was passed.

Sarah Wilson reported we still need a Technology Facilitator. Patti Dunbar will train this person.

Dan Oyler reported that the invitation for the Golf Tournament has been e-mailed to the membership. Giveaways are requested from Board members.

HRCI is developing two new certifications—Administrative non-exempt HR and strategic business competency.

Sarah Wilson requested the Succession Planning Questionnaire from the Board so she can develop a matrix.

Sarah Wilson reminded everyone of the Chapter President Checklist. Each Board member should be reviewing it.

Sarah Wilson reported new banners have been received and will be displayed at today’s meeting.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Sandy Hamilton, Secretary

Member Birthdays
See the Birthday List in the left column.

The Board thought it might be a nice idea to list member birthdays each month in the newsletter. If you see that it's a friend's birthday, feel free to send a card, make a phone call, or even bake a cake for that person! In order to start the birthday list idea, we need for all members to update their member profiles on the web site. Click here to go to the "Update Your Member Record" section of the site. Your log-in is the first initial of your first name and your whole last name. The password is rvshrm. Click "Edit My Info" and your profile will pop up. Scroll down to enter your birth month and day. And, please check the accuracy of your other information as well. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Joy Hanson, Newsletter Editor, at jhanson@rkeauthority.org or 983-9216. Thank you.
