President's Message
by Sharon Bowers

If you were at our July meeting you should have left excited and ready to help our Workforce Readiness Advocates, Lauren Prada and Beth Pinson, with the High School partnerships they have continued to develop, geared to better prepare our youth for their future employment. Special thanks to our 3 teachers who shared their experiences and also to our very own Amy Fulton and Liz Fitzgerald. If you want to know more please contact Lauren Prada at lauren.prada@adeccona.com. Your experiences and knowledge can go a long way with a student who is preparing for the future business world.

Barbara Phelps, Dan Semones and I attended the State SHRM meeting in Staunton this past month. We always discuss many important issues but the topic that I most look forward to is our Legal Update. Our Legislative Director, Karen Elliott, JD, reminded us of the three issues that continue to be looked at; paperless payroll, guns in the workplace and immigration. Also, there seems to be a rise in lawsuits where employees have sued their employers over the hiring of illegal workers. These suits allege that the employers, have intentionally hired illegal workers and paid them low wages to cut costs and depress the wages of legal workers. Companies targeted appear to be those with low profit margins, high turn over of low skilled workers and a reliance on recruiters to provide a regular supply of new workers.

Another important issue that Karen reviewed is the rise of identity theft. She recommended the following steps that employers should take to protect employee information:

· Review your collection, storage and destruction of all employee information such as social security numbers, dates of birth, and driver’s license numbers.
· Keep the above information segregated and secure from other data.
· Monitor and restrict access to employee information.
· Encrypt databases or files that contain this information.
· Hold accountable those employees with access. Consider limiting the number who have access.
· Develop a contingency plan for data breach and steps for recovery.

And finally, she reviewed the announcement of a new EEOC policy that may turn seemingly minor individual charges into company-wide investigations. The EEOC will focus on investigating and litigating systemic class-wide cases over those cases that involve individual claims of discrimination. Bottom line, review your hiring practices. Those employers who have a gross under representation of one population will definitely stand out.

As always, mark those calendars for our August meeting. Remember this is our annual CEO Breakfast and you will not want to miss it. Also, please remember to pre-register. We do not want to have to turn anyone away because we do not have adequate seating or food. And, if you haven’t already, register for the State Conference now!

See you soon!

Respectfully,
Sharon Bowers
RVSHRM 2006 President

The Roanoke Chapter Sponsors Memberships

The Roanoke SHRM Chapter will sponsor memberships for several HR Professionals whose employers do not fund their National and Local SHRM memberships. Through these one-year memberships, the Chapter hopes to better serve the community and to reach persons engaged daily in the field of HR who may not currently be participating in the either organization.

Recipients of the Chapter-sponsored memberships will be expected to pay their own fees for the Chapter’s monthly luncheons and other events. They will not be identified to Chapter members as recipients of sponsored memberships.

Persons interested in applying for the one-year membership should submit the following items as soon as possible:

· Letter of interest, describing their current position and the
benefits they hope to receive from National and Local
  SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer that includes
confirmation their memberships will not be employer-paid

If you are interested, please contact Barbara Phelps.  Funds available for this new program are limited, so you are encouraged to act promptly to ensure your request is fully considered.
