President's Message

Managing Your Career
What have you done for YOU lately?

It’s easy to direct our attention to those who need development….  We create individual development plans for high potentials to continue their growth and development.  Sometimes we create improvement plans to help individuals improve to an acceptable level.  When was the last time you took a critical look at your career? Where’s your development plan?

I once had a boss who also served as a mentor.  He helped me understand that my duty to myself and the organization was to constantly work on my resume.  At performance review time, we discussed what I’d added to make me more marketable – this always helped the organization as well.  It was a bit of a challenge to consistently increase my skill set by adding diverse accomplishments that helped the operations team meet their goals.  But in the end, it was worth the investment of time and effort.

SHRM has a great tool designed to help members focus on development:  SHRM Career Guide.  Check it out!  What else can you do?  Ask your mentor for input.  If you don’t have a mentor, consider finding an RVSHRM member to serve as your partner in development.  This can be a mutually beneficial relationship made easier by the relationships that you have developed as a member of our great organization!

AND….  Don’t forget about the value of PHR and SPHR certification!  Almost half of those who responded to the 2008 membership survey indicated they are certified.  Click here to learn more about how to become certified.  HRCI Website

Johna Campbell, SPHR

Becky Reynolds’ Wellness Special Interest Group has over 20 members with eleven attending the last meeting.

Sharon Bowers announced that our website is in need of updating.  National SHRM can offer a template for update and can train us to make our own changes at no cost.  Sharon will verify if National SHRM’s website format will allow e-mails to members.

Johna Campbell encouraged Board Members to start thinking about and planning for replacements for the 2009 Board.

Johna Campbell invited Board Members to participate in a Strategic Meeting on August 26th, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.  Tracy Hale will see if her company’s Board Room is available for this meeting.

The September 23rd regular meeting date will feature a two-hour workshop on strategic planning.  SPHR credit will be offered as well as a presentation on RVSHRM’s own strategic plans.  Tentative time for this workshop is 7:30 – 10:30 a.m.  Joy Hanson is working on a location for the September and October meetings.

It was announced that Clint Morse’s wife, Marianne, passed away last week.  A memorial gift was sent from RVSHRM.

Johna Campbell reported that the Foundation is asking for an earlier deadline (October 31st) for our donation.  A large raffle will be conducted at the Diversity Meeting in November. The proceeds could be used for the Foundation and/or scholarships.

Debbie Honaker will prepare a spreadsheet showing incurred expenses for 2008.

There being no future business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Sandy Hamilton, Secretary

The year is half over.  How are you doing on the diversity initiatives in your organization?  This may be a good time to sit down with your company leaders and talk about the subject:  how diverse is your organization?  is there a true feeling of inclusiveness within your organization? do your hiring practices reflect your philosophy? do your employees really understand how productive a diverse workforce can be?  and what about your customer base?  are you attractive to different generations, races, nationalities, religions?  These and other topics might be good ones to discuss before you go in to the fall planning and budgeting time.  And mark your calendars for the November RVSHRM meeting where we will highlight some local companies' philosophies and practices - more details to follow next month.

The Value of HR Certification (from SHRM)

To the HR professional:

  • Obtaining and maintaining HR certification demonstrates a commitment to staying current in the HR field throughout your career.
  • Certification will set you apart professionally and competitively from those without it. It can get your resume to the top of the pile when applying for a new job. Fifty percent of certified professionals report that their company prefers HR-certified job candidates.
  • Certification can help you make a greater contribution to your organization. Fifty-six percent of certified HR professionals experience greater collaboration between HR and senior management, compared with 38 percent of those who are non-certified.
  • Unlike a certificate program in which a person attends a class and then receives a certificate of completion, certification is a long-term commitment to staying abreast of best HR practices because of the recertification requirements one must meet to remain certified.

To a student:

  • --HR certification is a key part of a long-term career plan. Those seeking a career in HR must strive to master the HR body of knowledge.
  • HR students will demonstrate their commitment to the field and to their future employers by seeking HR certification.

To SHRM members:

  • The HR Certification Institute is committed to helping SHRM members advance their careers through HR certification. SHRMʼs preparatory and recertification products will help HR professionals obtain and maintain their professional edge.
  • SHRM members receive a $50 discount on the exam fee.

For additional information about certification as a Professional in Human Resources or Senior Professional in Human Resources from the Human Resources Certification Institute, please check www.hrci.org or contact Phil Peters, Carilion Clinic, at 983-4010.
