President's Message

President’s Message
December 2005

Holiday Greetings to You and Yours!

It is with anticipation and sadness that I write this last President’s Message, anticipation for my new adventure at the Beach and sadness to end my tenure as your President. Thanks to all the Board members who made my job so easy. We have accomplished great things together. I am sure that Sharon Bowers will pick up the pace as we move towards the State Conference in October 2006.

The Diversity Committee did a great job in November. Thanks to Barbara Phelps and her committee for another innovative and informative diversity meeting. Mel Asbury, SPHR did a great job, and reminded us to focus on the sameness instead of the differences.

I will end this on the same thought that I have expressed as your President for many months. This is YOUR professional development organization, and you will only get out of it what you put into it. Take advantage of the professional speakers, networking, and a time to share the good, the bad, the ugly, with fellow professionals who truly understand what it is like in the trenches. Can you afford to not spend two hours a month on your own career? Hmmm….

See you on the 14th at the Holiday Social at Hotel Roanoke from 3pm-5pm. Register today.

Sarah

Board Meeting Minutes
by Sandy Hamilton

Minutes from Board Meeting
November 22, 2005
Hotel Roanoke – 10:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.

The following Board Members were in attendance:
Sarah Wilson, Joy Hanson, Donna Moses, Debbie Honaker, Dan Oyler, Matt Duffy, Sandy Hamilton, Sharon Bowers, Barbara Phelps, Donna Tatum, Dan Semones, Joyce Kessinger and Lauren Prada.

Sarah Wilson, 2005 President, called the meeting to order.

Motion was made by Sharon Bowers and seconded by Dan Oyler to approve the October 25, 2005, Board Minutes after correcting the spelling of Debbie Reid’s name. The motion was carried.

Debbie Honaker presented the Treasurer’s Report. Motion was made by Sharon Bowers and seconded by Sandy Hamilton to move $2,500 from the Money Market Account to the Checking Account to avoid the $12 low balance fee. Motion was carried.

Sarah Wilson and Joyce Kessinger announced that the Holiday Party has been moved to Hotel Roanoke on Wednesday, December 14th, 3:00-5:00 p.m. The cost will be $15 for members and one free guest. The party will be announced in the newsletter.

Sarah Wilson welcomed back Joy Hanson from maternity leave.

Donna Tatum announced that a dozen holiday items have been donated for the Silent Auction. More items are needed.

Dan Semones announced all is on track for the 2006 Conference including the website, speakers, etc. The next planning meeting is December 7th. Alternate sites for lodging for the conference are being explored. Early Bird registration will be held in May, 2006.

Donna Moses announced we have three new members for a total of 262 members. Donna has talked with the other references on joint billing. The issues and concerns they expressed would probably not apply to our chapter. Billing has been processed for the upcoming year, and we have received 35 renewals. Heads of Committees will be notified of volunteers as the renewals are received.

Lauren Prada reported on the meeting of the Workforce Readiness Committee at Hidden Valley. Eight people attended the meeting. More volunteers are needed. The schedule for working in the schools starts in December and concludes with the end of the school year. Morning training sessions will be held at the schools. We were reminded that volunteers should find their own substitutes in case of a scheduling conflict.

Motion was made by Sharon Bowers and seconded by Dan Oyler that the VEC survey for employers should be under the umbrella of the Workforce Readiness Committee and that the survey should be sent to the membership. Motion was carried.

Dan Oyler announced that HRCI classes will start January 18th at the Higher Education Center in Room 806. Registration information is at www.mbc.edu\learninc.

Sharon Bowers reported that a Board planning meeting will be held on
December 9th, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Dan Semones’ office. Board Members were asked to go on the website, www.shrm.org\vlrc, pull up the Achievement Plan and fill out the section which applies to their office/committee. Lunch will be served at this planning meeting.

Sharon Bowers also reported on the leadership conference.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Sandy Hamilton
Secretary

Leading Indicator of National Employment (LINE)

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Rutgers University School of Management and Labor Relations are working in collaboration to produce and publish a new monthly indicator, the SHRM/Rutgers Leading Indicator of National Employment (LINE).

The SHRM/Rutgers LINE index is based on a monthly survey of Human Resource professionals at manufacturing firms. LINE measures change in five components: number of employees, number of vacant positions, difficulty in recruiting highly qualified employees, compensation offered to new hires, and hiring plans for the upcoming month.

You can sign up to receive updates when the SHRM/Rutgers LINE is released each month. To find out more about LINE, go to www.shrm.org/line.

HRM Certificate Program Begins in January

Mary Baldwin College will offer its HRM Certificate Program in Roanoke beginning on January 18, 2006. This popular 13-week course will meet once per week on Wednesday nights from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Roanoke Higher Education Center. Dan Oyler will facilitate the preparation course for HR professionals interested in sitting for the PHR or SPHR exam in the spring. Participants will receive a certificate from the college and CEUs. For more information or to register, visit Mary Baldwin’s Web site at www.mbc.edu/learninc or call Dan Dowdy at 767-6173.

Inflation impacts RVSHRM

The RVSHRM Board of Directors regrets to announce a price increase for the monthly lunch meetings for 2006. The Hotel Roanoke had found it necessary to increase the cost of the lunches for 2005; however, the board decided to monitor the situation and absorb the additional cost during this year before making a decision as to how much of an increase is needed.

Beginning with the January 2006 meeting members will be charged $20.00 while guests will pay $25.00 per meeting. The new rate will include parking passes for those attendees who need them and will cover any fixed costs for each meeting such as audio-visual equipment needed for the program.

Christmas, Fundraising and Fun!

December is fast approaching and the SHRM Foundation needs your help to make this a fun and rewarding meeting for our Roanoke Valley Chapter. Donations are needed for the silent auction. We already have some very nice items and trips to be auctioned off, but we need many more. This is a great opportunity to promote your company, do some Christmas shopping and raise money for the last donation for 2005 to ensure our Chapter Champion status.

Please contact me if you would like to volunteer on the Foundation Committee.

Call me at 389-8979 with your silent auction items and we will be happy to make arrangements to pick them up.

To learn more about the Foundation and the findings of its most recent research and educational projects visit www.shrm.org/foundation.

SHRM Foundation Vision/Mission
The SHRM Foundation maximizes the impact of the HR profession on organizational decision-making and performance by promoting innovation, research, and the use of research-based knowledge.

Member Birthdays
See the Birthday List in the left column.

The Board thought it might be a nice idea to list member birthdays each month in the newsletter. If you see that it's a friend's birthday, feel free to send a card, make a phone call, or even bake a cake for that person! In order to start the birthday list idea, we need for all members to update their member profiles on the web site. Click here to go to the "Update Your Member Record" section of the site. Your log-in is the first initial of your first name and your whole last name. The password is rvshrm. Click "Edit My Info" and your profile will pop up. Scroll down to enter your birth month and day. And, please check the accuracy of your other information as well. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Joy Hanson, Newsletter Editor, at jhanson@rkeauthority.org or 983-9216. Thank you.
