President's
Message
by
Sharon Bowers

Happy Holidays to all
of you!
This is my last President’s Message and while I
am a little sad, I am also excited about the new
year for our Chapter under the leadership of
Barbara Phelps. Already plans are underway for
meetings and events. Don’t forget to renew those
local memberships because you will not want to
miss a thing! And, thank you to the board and
their committee’s for making my year a breeze! I
am honored to be a part of such a fine group of
professionals.
Thank you, also, to our Diversity Committee
(Debbie Reid, Matt Duffy and Phil Peters) for
the presentation on I-9’s and the Immigration
Law changes at our last meeting. It was very
informative and “eye-opening”. Thank you guys!
Remember, this is your organization. Be a part
of it – join committees, seek a position on the
board and let your voice be heard. As with this
or any organization, you only get out of it what
you are willing to put into it.
Thank you, again, for a memorable year! I look
forward to seeing all of you at the Holiday
social this month.
Blessings!
Sharon

Board
Meeting Minutes
by Sandy Hamilton
|
HOTEL ROANOKE,
NOVEMBER 28, 2006
10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
The following Board Members were in
attendance:
Sharon Bowers, Joy Hanson, Donna Tatum,
Debbie Reid, Dan Oyler, Debbie Honaker,
Sandy Hamilton, Johna Campbell, Joyce
Kessinger, and Lauren LaPrada.
Motion was made by Dan Oyler and seconded by
Joyce Kessinger to approve the August 22,
2006 and September 25, 2006, Board Minutes.
The motion was passed.
Debbie Honaker reported that Coy Renick has
requested that $15 per State Conference
registrant be given to the State Council.
Debbie also reported that approximately
$60,000 profit will be realized from the
State Conference. Proposals will be
solicited and considered for the disposition
of the profit from the State Conference
(education, scholarships, Workforce
Readiness, etc.).
Motion was made by Dan Oyler and seconded by
Johna Campbell that Debbie Honaker establish
a separate checking account for the profit
from the State Conference. The motion was
passed.
Sharon Bowers presented Debbie Honaker with
a $1,300 check for membership.
Dan Oyler reported on the status of the
by-laws. Todd Leason has not reported back
that our by-laws will comply with State law,
but Dan feels strongly that this will not be
an issue. Dan will ask the membership to
vote on the by-laws at today’s meeting.
Sharon Bowers has been asked to be on the
membership committee of the State Council.
Sharon Bowers will notify the membership at
today’s meeting of the need to recommend
members for openings for the 2007 RVSHRM
Board.
Sharon Bowers requested that Board Members
review the Superior Merit award requirements
before the next meeting.
Donna Tatum asked for donations for the
December social’s Silent Auction. Donna has
obtained ten donations to date. Motion was
made by Joyce Kessinger and seconded by
Debbie Reid to spend up to $1,000 to buy
items for the auction. The motion was
passed.
Motion was made by Dan Oyler and seconded by
Joyce Kessinger to pay $200 to Dan Semones
for his DJ services at the December social.
This motion was passed.
It was announced that the December social
will be free to members and $20 for guests
(pay at the door). A broadcast e-mail will
be sent to the membership so that members
and guests can register directly with Joyce
Kessinger.
It was announced that joint national billing
will not be an option for 2007. Donna Moses
will be contacted about plans for billing
for 2007.
New officers will be inducted in January
2007.
Board Members will meet in the Pine Room or
AKA room at Hotel Roanoke for a social on
December 19th after the regular December
19th social.
There being no further business, the meeting
was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandy Hamilton, Secretary

Board/Membership Approves Constitution/By-Laws
Changes
The
RVSHRM Board and membership unanimously approved
revisions to the constitution/by-laws for our
Chapter at the last meeting on November 28th.
The minor changes to our by-laws were again to
align us more closely with National SHRM and to
ensure all legally required amendments were in
place. You are encouraged to read the by-laws,
which are
available in PDF format by clicking here.
Amendments are highlighted.
HRM Certificate Program Begins in January
Mary Baldwin
College will offer its HRM Certificate Program
in Roanoke beginning on January 24, 2007. This
popular 13-week course will meet once per week
on Wednesday nights from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the
Roanoke Higher Education Center. Dan Oyler will
facilitate the preparation course for HR
professionals interested in sitting for the PHR
or SPHR exam. Participants will receive a
certificate from the college and CEUs. For more
information or to register, visit Mary Baldwin’s
Web site at
www.mbc.edu/learninc or contact Dan Dowdy at
767-6173 or
ddowdy@mbc.edu
Workforce Readiness Committee
The Workforce
Readiness Committee is currently planning for
the 2006/2007 school year. We will again be
offering sessions to homerooms at Wm Byrd HS and
starting a program at Wm Byrd Middle School as
well. We are currently looking for a date to
have our first meeting with the staff and
faculty of Wm Bryd to discuss the plans for this
years program. All past volunteers as well as
those interested in finding out more about
volunteering for this year will be invited.
Please keep an eye out for an email with the
date and other important information. Any
immediate questions can be sent to me at
lauren.prada@adeccona.com.
The Roanoke Chapter Sponsors Memberships
The Roanoke SHRM
Chapter will sponsor memberships for several HR
Professionals whose employers do not fund their
National and Local SHRM memberships. Through
these one-year memberships, the Chapter hopes to
better serve the community and to reach persons
engaged daily in the field of HR who may not
currently be participating in the either
organization.
Recipients of the Chapter-sponsored memberships
will be expected to pay their own fees for the
Chapter’s monthly luncheons and other events.
They will not be identified to Chapter members
as recipients of sponsored memberships.
Persons interested in applying for the one-year
membership should submit the following items as
soon as possible:
· Letter of interest, describing their current
position and the
benefits they hope to receive from National
and Local
SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer
that includes
confirmation their memberships will not be
employer-paid
If you are interested, please contact
Barbara Phelps. Funds available for this
new program are limited, so you are encouraged
to act promptly to ensure your request is fully
considered. |
