President’s Message
February 2006
Hard to believe that we are into the second
month of the New Year! Makes one realize how
precious time is and how we truly need to manage
it well. Rhonda Young and Phil Peters, both with
Carilion Health Systems presented an excellent
program last month on the automation of their
employment processes which definitely helped
them to save time. Hope everyone was able to
attend.
Did you know that the SHRM website offers many
resources and links to help you save time? Do
not reinvent the wheel – utilize this tool by
going to www.shrm.org. Remember, it offers
valuable information in the form of articles,
research reports, forms, white papers and much
more.
Have a great month and don’t forget to register
for our February meeting. It should be exciting
and informative! Also, don’t forget to register
for the State Conference to be held this October
at the Hotel Roanoke. You can register on-line
by going to our website and clicking on the

Minutes from Board Meeting
January 6, 2006
Virginia Rehabilitative Services’ Office,
9:00 – 10:30 a.m.
The following
Board Members were in attendance:
Sharon Bowers, Donna Moses, Debbie Reid,
Donna Tatum, Debbie Honaker, Joy Hanson,
Barbara Phelps, Sandy Hamilton, Johna
Campbell, David Wolfe, Lauren Prada, and
Matt Duffy.
Sharon Bowers, 2006 President, called the
meeting to order.
The following reports were presented on the
results of 2005 goals and goals for 2006:
Dan Oyler – Professional Development
Sharon Bowers reported for Dan Oyler that
all of the questions on HRCI Certification
Leadership for 2005 are “Yes” except the
question, “Achieved a net increase in the
number of chapter board members certified.”
Dan reported that we have actually decreased
by two.
2006 Goals are as follows:
1. Offer Spring and Fall university-based
Study Course in conjunction with Mary
Baldwin College.
2. Offer HR Essentials class for non-HR and
those new to HR
3. Write one or two articles on
certification for the newsletter
4. Maintain Chapter certification at 40% of
membership
5. Offer 3 or more programs per year with
Certification Credits (in conjunction with
Programs Committee.)
6. Increase number of certified
professionals on the Chapter Board.
Johna Campbell – Programs

and felt like they were accomplished. Four

Debbie Honaker – Treasurer
Debbie Honaker felt the Treasurer’s goals
for 2005 were met. She presented Board
Members with a copy of the 2006 budget. She
noted that the program for the website, Dan
Semones’ trip to National and an ad in the
Blue Ridge Business Journal accounted for
the $6,000 over budget amount for 2005.
Debbie asked Board Members to review the
2006 budget and be ready to discuss it at
the next Board Meeting. It was also
announced that $1,366 was realized on the
December auction.
Donna Moses – Membership
Donna Moses reviewed the 2005 goals. Since
Donna accepted leadership of the Membership
Committee mid-year and does not have access
to some prior information, she felt that it
is questionable that we obtained 90%
renewals from our membership, that we
converted 40% of guests to members (most
guests are perhaps not potential members so
this percentage needs to be revised for
2006), that all members who did not renew
were personally contacted, and that
membership information was presented at
every meeting.
2006 Goals are as follows:
1. Obtain renewal from 85% of membership
2. Convert 40% of qualified guests to
members
3. Call all new members for orientation
4. Contact all members who do not renew
5. Contact all guests who fill out cards
6. Present membership information at every
meeting
7. Highlight new members at every meeting.
8. Post membership information on website
9. Accept renewals only if National SHRM
information is provided
10. Place Chapter on National billing.
David Wolfe – Communications
David Wolfe felt 2005 goals were met.
2006 Goals are as follows:
1. Determine if budget is sufficient for
website maintenance and determine return on
the investment.
2. Update information on Board Members
3. Review and update website information
(consider electronic directory)
4. Identify and prioritize special projects
(including membership update)
Joy Hanson – Newsletter
Joy Hanson felt 2005 goals basically were
met.
2006 Goals are as follows:
1. Monthly newsletter goes out the 5th of
every month.
2. Articles are due after Board Meeting/last
week of month

1. Attend Expos and interact with other
members
2. Continue 50/50 raffle for Foundation
3. Hold one monthly presentation on
utilizing website material
4. Hold Silent Auction for December Holiday
Social
Lauren Prada – Workforce Readiness
Lauren Prada felt 2005 goals were met.
2006 Goals are as follows:
1. Successfully complete Phase I of the
program in William Byrd High School and
continue in the fall term.
2. Add an additional high school and
additional volunteers to the present
program.
Matt Duffy – Historian
2006 Goals are as follows:
1. Place historian information on disk
2. Take pictures of meetings, events, etc.
and perhaps place on website
Barbara Phelps/Debbie Reid – Diversity
2006 Goals are as follows:
1. More minority members involved in RVSHRM
2. More articles in newsletter on diversity
3. November meeting will be devoted to
diversity program
Kathy Claytor – Student Chapter
In 2005, RVSHRM completed the following
initiatives to support the student chapter:
Membership grew from one chapter member to
eight chapter members (seven is required to
maintain the charter).
RVSHRM made a financial contribution to the
chapter and paid the cost of seven SHRM
student memberships at $35 each and one
chapter advisor membership at $100. Total
2005 financial commitment was $345.
Hosted six students at a monthly RVSHRM
meeting with RVSHRM covering the cost of the
luncheon for each.
Hosted one student at an RVSHRM Board
Meeting.
Surveyed RVSHRM chapter membership and
provided a list of chapter member speakers
and internship sites. Two RVSHRM chapter
members spoke/ provided support/ information
to the students at their monthly meetings.
Delta Dental of VA sponsored a student
chapter intern for the spring semester for a
total of 120 hours.
In the fall of 2005, held planning meeting
with Dr. Gail McKee and Bayard Harris,
Roanoke College faculty. Goals for 2006 are
as follows:
1. Facilitate Mentor opportunities
2. Outreach to other Roanoke Valley colleges
to promote membership in student chapter
3. Outreach to nearby student chapters at VA
Tech and Radford
4. Explore alternative to the scholarship
program such as sponsoring a trip to the
National SHRM Conference
Joyce Kessinger – Arrangements
2005 Goals were reviewed as follows:
1. Becky Reynolds tracked member attendance.
2. Registration was streamlined by using a
spreadsheet with names of those registered
listed. Since most members have nametags,
pre-printing is not necessary.
3. Attendance was reconciled with the cash
and checks before passing to the Treasurer.
Attendance was also reconciled with the
hotel bill before payment.
4. Member involvement this year has included
Joy Hanson, Bill Stephenson, Karen Cobble,
Matt Duffy and Debbie Honaker.
5. Evaluations were not performed on
food/arrangements.
6. Three buffets were held this year.
7. There is no need for members to bring
receipts to the meetings since the Treasurer
has information on the credit cards.
8. Invoices and receipts are provided at the
registration table.
2006 Goals are as follows:
1. Continue to work on streamlining
registration.
2. Continue to work on reconciling
attendance with cash and checks and hotel
bills.
3. Solicit different people to help with
registration
4. Conduct a survey on food choices
5. Continue to educate members about
registering in advance
6. Prepare an arrangements’ handbook for the
next Vice President
Sharon Bowers requested that Board Members
e-mail her the results of the 2005 Chapter
Achievement Plan by Thursday, January 12,
2006.
Sharon Bowers asked Board Members to
introduce themselves at the next meeting and
be prepared to tell something about their
committee and ask for volunteers.
Sharon Bowers thanked the 2005 Board Members
for all their hard work.
It was decided that the Board Meetings will
continue to be held from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
prior to the membership meeting. Meetings
will begin at 12:15 p.m., and members will
be advised that meetings and registration
will be 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

install the officers at the next regular
meeting.

performed for 2005.

the Pinnacle Award in 2006.
It was suggested that chapter buttons be
available for the Leadership Conference in
November and maybe for the State Conference
in October.
There being no further business, the meeting
was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandy Hamilton, Secretary

Roanoke Partnership for Employed Caregivers
By Sandy Hamilton, CEBS
This
was the topic of our May 2005 meeting. At this
meeting, Frank Rogan, Executive Director for the
United Way and member of the Executive Committee
of The Partnership for Employed Caregivers,
introduced the partnership to our membership.
Since eldercare is quickly becoming a challenge
that many individuals and businesses are not
prepared to face, it was felt that another call
to action is appropriate. Please take a few
minutes to review the following article on
Eldercare:
Eldercare. How Does it Affect Our Company?
A focus on impact and solutions
By: Maggie Gray, SPHR
Twenty-five years ago, businesses were faced
with a call for change to accommodate the needs
of workers with young children. Today, our
rapidly aging population presents companies with
a new call for change—policies and benefits to
address the needs of workers who are providing
eldercare.
With the Roanoke Valley aging population growing
faster than even the rapid growth experienced
nationally, a partnership has formed to address
related challenges. The Roanoke Partnership for
Employed Caregivers is a collaborative
initiative between the public, private and
non-profit sectors in the Roanoke Valley to
address the challenges of eldercare and the
workplace. The Partnership is encouraging
companies to become eldercare friendly in order
to:
· Reduce the negative impact of caregiving on their
bottom-line;
· Find it easier to attract and retain the best workers;
· Increase productivity by reducing stress on employees;
· Reduce disruptions in the work schedule; and
· Enhance their community image, which can attract new
customers.
Employed caregivers do not have to go it alone
and companies do not have to lose valuable
employees, time and money. There are a variety
of benefits that an employer can offer that can
provide positive results for both employers and
employees.
Several members of RVSHRM are involved in this
project, and we still need your help.
If you would like someone from the Partnership
to come and speak to you about the resources it
can provide please call or e-mail the
partnership at:
540-982-2345 or
info@employedcaregivers.org.
The Roanoke Chapter Sponsors Memberships
The Roanoke SHRM
Chapter will sponsor memberships for several HR
Professionals whose employers do not fund their
National and Local SHRM memberships. Through
these one-year memberships, the Chapter hopes to
better serve the community and to reach persons
engaged daily in the field of HR who may not
currently be participating in the either
organization.
Recipients of the Chapter-sponsored memberships
will be expected to pay their own fees for the
Chapter’s monthly luncheons and other events.
They will not be identified to Chapter members
as recipients of sponsored memberships.
Persons interested in applying for the one-year
membership should submit the following items as
soon as possible:
· Letter of interest, describing their current
position and the
benefits they hope to receive from National
and Local
SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer
that includes
confirmation their memberships will not be
employer-paid
If you are interested, please contact
Barbara Phelps. Funds available for this
new program are limited, so you are encouraged
to act promptly to ensure your request is fully
considered.
