President's Message
by Charlotte Mason

Happy New Year!

I hope you’re enjoyed the recent holiday season and are looking forward to an enjoyable and prosperous year in 2004.

We had a very productive meeting in December that brought together the 2003 and 2004 board members. We looked back over our board and committee accomplishments in 2003 and began making plans for changes and improvements in 2004. We plan to provide a wide range of information and topics this year that will be beneficial to the senior HR professional as well as the new HR professional. We always value your suggestions and input for programs, seminars and other learning opportunities. Please give us your ideas and suggestions so we can best meet your needs.

The committee chairpersons will soon be scheduling committee meetings to make plans and set goals for the year. I encourage you to take an active part in your SHRM chapter this year. If you have an interest in serving on one of the committees, please contact the committee chairperson for that committee. The chairperson contact information is provided on our web site. By serving on a committee, you will have an opportunity to meet fellow SHRM members and provide service to your chapter and its membership. Our chapter is only as great as we all make it!

I would like to say a special thanks to our outgoing President, Mike Leach. He did an excellent job helping me transition into the position of President. I’m sure I’ll be calling on him throughout the year for his expertise in various areas relating to Board responsibilities.

Mark your calendars for the fourth Tuesday in January for a very special SHRM celebration. We will be celebrating our 50th anniversary as Roanoke Valley SHRM chapter. Look for your invitation in the mail, and please make a special effort to join us for this very exciting event!

The Roanoke Chapter Sponsors Memberships

In 2004, the Roanoke Chapter will sponsor memberships for several HR Professionals whose employers do not fund their National and Local SHRM memberships. Through these one-year memberships, the Chapter hopes to better serve the community and to reach persons engaged daily in the field of HR who may not currently be participating in the either organization.

Recipients of the Chapter-sponsored memberships will be expected to pay their own fees for the Chapter’s monthly luncheons and other events. They will not be identified to Chapter members as recipients of sponsored memberships.

Persons interested in applying for the one-year membership should submit the following items as soon as possible:

· Letter of interest, describing their current position and the
benefits they hope to receive from National and Local
  SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer that includes
confirmation their memberships will not be employer-paid.

If you’re interested, please contact Barbara Phelps, Matt Duffy, or Debra Lovelace. Funds available for this new program are limited, so you are encouraged to act promptly to ensure your request is fully considered.

CFOs and 2004

A mid-December newsletter from Staffing.org cited telephone calls the organization made to CFOs, in which the CFOs were asked for advice and perspectives for HR. The author noted "Although their feedback was as serious as usual, the edge that I've been hearing for so long was missing from most of the conversations. It may be the time of the year, but's a good sign nevertheless. Perhaps HR has earned more respect."

The author included feedback he received from five of the CFOs:

"Want to hear fewer words and see more numbers that can be substantiated."
"Don't bring in "Can I - yes or no requests . . . bring options that can be accurately compared."
"Bad news is okay; we know we can deal with it."
"We'll invest in HR as long as there is a business case."
The moral of the story seems to be this: Make a sound business case for the need, put forth several options for action and base your argument on numbers, not words. That's a paradigm shift for many of us in the HR field--we usually prefer to put forward our ideas as "the right thing to do". However, if we want to get our projects and initiatives funded in 2004, we probably should keep these points in mind.
