RVSHRM January 2007 Membership Meeting

"What HR Professionals Need to Know
about the New Electronic Discovery Rules"

Presented by Todd A. Leeson,
partner with Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore law firm in Roanoke

The Hotel Roanoke
Tuesday, January 23, 2007
Networking - 11:30, Program and lunch - Noon

How many emails have you sent or received in the last week? Do you know how your executives and managers store the hundreds of emails that they receive or send each month? Are you aware that your company's internal emails are generally discoverable in an employment case? Did you know that on December 1, 2006, sweeping new federal rules took effect that will require companies to identify and/or produce all of its "electronically stored information" ("ESI") that is relevant to any employment case (or any other civil case filed in federal court)?

This session will provide you with information you need to know about the new federal electronic discovery rules. Todd will also provide you with practical recommendations as to best practices your company should be following that will better position you in the event a claim is ever lodged against your company.

While this event addresses issues specific to the HR arena, the potential to impact the larger organization is immense . I encourage you to invite one or more members of your executive team so that they have the opportunity to learn first hand from the legal overview that Todd Leeson will provide.

Please make reservations by utilizing the on-line event reservation form or e-mailing Joy Hanson at jhanson@iamrrha.org. Please include "RVSHRM RSVP January 2007" in the subject line. Registration Deadline is Wednesday, January 17th.

President's Message
by Barbara Phelps

Happy New Year,

I trust this message find you and your family in good health and sprits, and looking forward to this wonderful New Year. I certainly wish each of you the very best as this year unfold.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Past President, Sharon Bowers, for her superb guidance and insightful leadership that she dedicated to our chapter last year. I personally, would like to thank Sharon for sharing information, providing feedback, and assisting me to prepare for this role.

To the 2006 Board, thank you for your contributions, dedication and hard work in making RVSHRM a success. With everyone’s work and family schedules, I know it is a challenge to serve on boards and committees, but each of you stood up to that challenge.
Again, I say thanks, for your dedication and time.

As most of you are aware we hosted the 2006 SHRM Virginia State Conference at Hotel Roanoke. The conference consisted of great speakers, informative sessions and more than Five Hundred dedicated attendees. I would like to extend a special thanks to Dan Semones, Conference Chair; Committee Chairs; and committee members for your commitment, assistance and the beautiful smiles you shared with our attendees. Based on the feedback we received the State Conference was a huge success.

As HR professionals, I challenge each of you to become more involved in our chapter. I encourage you to speak up if there are issues or topics that you would like to see/hear in our monthly meetings. I encourage you to share feedback, and get involved in a committee or board position. I realize this can be very time consuming but as HR professionals we have an obligation to stay current with issues that affects employment, legislation, compensation, employee relations, and all other components of our profession.

The fourth Tuesday of each month we plan to have lunch at The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center. It would be such an honor to have each of you there. Please do not hesitate to call me with ideas or suggestions. Remember this is YOUR organization and we want to continue to grow and get stronger.

Barbara W. Phelps
President
