Offshore Outsourcing: Riding the Perfect Storm as an HR Practitioner
Presented by: Jonathan Ward, US Managing Partner of The Global Effectiveness Group
and International Director of the Va. Council of SHRM.

The North American Free Trade Agreement, the growth of high-speed communications, and the increased globalization of the world s economies have combined to create a perfect storm of controversy. Faced with a need to reduce costs while maintaining high levels of customer service, companies in nearly every sector of the economy are moving jobs overseas. Customer satisfaction and shareholder value remain high, but the effects are often devastating on local communities who have seen the majority of their economic base disappear.

In this meeting, we will explore offshore outsourcing from the point of view of the company, the US company and economy, and the new host country. We will focus on the roles and responsibilities of the HR practitioner in the offshoring process, and explore the moral and ethical dilemmas that the HR department experiences as a company considers and implements offshoring. The session will conclude with opportunities for group discussion.

About the speaker:
Jonathan Ward is the US Managing Partner of The Global Effectiveness Group, an international consortium of organizational development consultants and leadership coaches. Jonathan works with global organizations to increase the effectiveness of their leaders, teams, and organizational processes in international settings.

Jonathan serves on the faculties of the University of Phoenix and Leadership Fairfax, Inc. He is also a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF). President's Message
by Charlotte Mason

The art of resting the mind and the power of dismissing from it all care and
worry is probably one of the secrets of energy in our great men.
--- Captain J. A. Hadfield

As the quote mentions, rest and relaxation is so important to our well-being. However, how many of us find that we very seldom are able to set aside time to recharge? As I was sitting on the beach at Hilton Head last week, I realized that I had totally forgotten how it felt to be relaxed and rested. (And, yes, that’s why the newsletter letter is late. It wasn’t Joy’s fault...)

When we take time to allow our bodies to rest, we will have more energy for the work that needs to be done. Are you really at your best and most productive when you are working in a state of exhaustion? I know I’m not as effective and productive.

As we think about recharging and reenergizing, we should also look at this from a professional development standpoint. We are facing constant change in our workplaces so we need to constantly attend trainings and classes to obtain new skills. And, HR is certainly a rapidly changing area as we recently have seen changes to the FLSA and COBRA. When you think of educational opportunities, we should always look for these opportunities through SHRM. I hope to see some of you at the National SHRM conference in New Orleans at the end of the month. I’m sure that will be an excellent opportunity for professional development and a great learning experience!

The Roanoke Chapter Sponsors Memberships

In 2004, the Roanoke Chapter will sponsor memberships for several HR Professionals whose employers do not fund their National and Local SHRM memberships. Through these one-year memberships, the Chapter hopes to better serve the community and to reach persons engaged daily in the field of HR who may not currently be participating in the either organization.

Recipients of the Chapter-sponsored memberships will be expected to pay their own fees for the Chapter’s monthly luncheons and other events. They will not be identified to Chapter members as recipients of sponsored memberships.

Persons interested in applying for the one-year membership should submit the following items as soon as possible:

· Letter of interest, describing their current position and the
benefits they hope to receive from National and Local
  SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer that includes
confirmation their memberships will not be employer-paid.

If you’re interested, please contact Barbara Phelps, Matt Duffy, or Debra Lovelace. Funds available for this new program are limited, so you are encouraged to act promptly to ensure your request is fully considered.
