President's Message
by Sharon Bowers

Hope you were among the lucky and able to attend our May meeting! Connie Roy-Czyzowski, VP of HR for Northeast Delta Dental gave a very enlightening and enjoyable presentation about how her company turned itself around from being a typical place to work, to one of the best places to work in a very short period of time. Bottom line: Employees want to work for an organization they can trust, while taking pride in what they do and enjoying the people they work with. Oh, and don’t forget the food! If you were there, you know what I’m talking about!

In case you missed it, our chapter has been awarded the Superior Merit Award again! By achieving this award, we have distinguished ourselves as an outstanding organization that is dedicated to advancing the human resources management profession while serving the needs of our membership. I believe our outstanding meetings are definite proof!

Recently, I was called by a writer with The Blue Ridge Journal asking if we, as a group of HR professionals, are thinking about the possibility of a bird flu pandemic. I quickly polled the board and one company (you guessed it…Delta Dental…go Kathy!) has actually started formulating a plan. Also, Sandy, with Commercial Insurances feels this will surely effect OSHA regulations, which started me to thinking about all it will effect; FMLA, sick time, health insurance costs and on and on. I would love to know if anyone else has started formulating a plan or has at least talked about this issue. Please email me and I will gather the information and share at an upcoming meeting.

Well, as always, I want to remind you to mark your calendar for this months meeting and register for the fall State Conference, if you haven’t already.

Take care and see you soon!

Board Meeting Minutes
by Sandy Hamilton

MINUTES FROM BOARD MEETING
MAY 23, 2006
HOTEL ROANOKE 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

The following Board Members were in attendance:
Sharon Bowers, Kathy Claytor, Donna Tatum, Donna Moses, Debbie Reid, Sandy Hamilton, Debbie Honaker, and Joy Hanson.

Sharon Bowers, 2006 President, called the meeting to order.

Motion was made by Donna Moses and seconded by Kathy Claytor to approve the minutes of the April 25, 2006, Board Meeting. The motion was carried.

Sharon Bowers reported she would contact Sherry Buckner to conduct the 2005 accounting audit. Sharon will also contact David Wolfe regarding reinstatement of the broadcast e-mails announcing monthly meetings.

Kathy Claytor has contacted the Roanoke College Student Chapter regarding students attending at least one RVSHRM meeting per year.

Debbie Honaker reported that the year-end taxes have been filed.

Donna Moses reported that she and Rick Mercer have cleaned up the membership database. Donna is checking on members-at-large. Dues will be pro-rated for new members joining during a membership year when joint billing commences.

The by-laws will be reviewed by Dan Oyler.

Sharon Bowers received a check from National. Donna Moses will check on the number of members being reimbursed since the number seems low. Numbers may differ because our chapter has not been designated by some members as their primary chapter.

Members are reminded to register for the State Conference. Sharon Bowers reported that the Roanoke Valley Visitors Brochure will be included in the attendees’ bags. An e-blast for the State Conference will go out to members by the end of the month.

Sharon Bowers announced that the State Meeting will be held in July in Staunton.
Anyone wishing to attend should contact her.

Sharon Bowers presented the Superior Merit Award Certificate and Banner.

Kathy Claytor announced she has an intern interested in a paid summer internship in HR.

This month’s raffle will feature a book and a $20 Sheetz gift certificate.
The meeting sponsored by David Camper will be held in September.

Sharon Bowers has not heard any more about WDBJ’s meeting proposal.

Registration fees for State Conference Chairmen and Co-Chairmen will be waived.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Sandy Hamilton, Secretary

Announcements

Donations were very generous in May for the SHRM Foundation drawing. We raised $84.00. Our prizes were donated so the entire amount will be donated.

Congratulations to Sharon Staples with Benefits group Inc., our winner of the $20.00 gift certificate to She’s International and a book by Cam Marston. Cam will be one of our keynote speakers for the VA State Conference.
To make research results more easily accessible to HR practitioners, the SHRM Foundation has introduced a new series of reports entitled Effective Practice Guidelines.
A new set of guidelines on a different HR topic will be published by the Foundation each year. Since it's often difficult for HR professionals to find time to read a full research report, these guidelines present important research findings in a condensed, easy-to-use format.
Here's how the reports are prepared: Subject matter experts with both research and practitioner experience are selected to prepare the guidelines. The author then distills the research findings and expert opinion into specific advice on how to conduct effective HR practice. The resulting report is reviewed by a panel of subject matter experts prior to being published by the Foundation. To provide a convenient reference tool, a substantial annotated bibliography is included with each report.
The author of the first two reports is Dr. Elaine Pulakos, executive vice president and director of the Personnel Decisions Research Institutes (PDRI) Washington, D.C. office. Dr. Pulakos is one of the country's leading experts in performance management and selection assessment, both as a researcher and a consultant, and she has provided the very best guidance available on these topics.

The Roanoke Chapter Sponsors Memberships

The Roanoke SHRM Chapter will sponsor memberships for several HR Professionals whose employers do not fund their National and Local SHRM memberships. Through these one-year memberships, the Chapter hopes to better serve the community and to reach persons engaged daily in the field of HR who may not currently be participating in the either organization.

Recipients of the Chapter-sponsored memberships will be expected to pay their own fees for the Chapter’s monthly luncheons and other events. They will not be identified to Chapter members as recipients of sponsored memberships.

Persons interested in applying for the one-year membership should submit the following items as soon as possible:

· Letter of interest, describing their current position and the
benefits they hope to receive from National and Local
  SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer that includes
confirmation their memberships will not be employer-paid

If you are interested, please contact Barbara Phelps.  Funds available for this new program are limited, so you are encouraged to act promptly to ensure your request is fully considered.
