"Power In Times of Uncertainty"
Presented by Julie Petrella, Ph.D.
President, Bravo Systems, Inc.

Who hasn’t had times of uncertainty? We all face uncertain times in our work, our personal lives, and our family lives. Regardless of your profession, your age or your background, if you are facing uncertainty in your life, this program is for you.
In this session, Dr. Julie Petrella uncovers a timeless and universal process that causes people to feel either powerless or powerful in times of uncertainty. Based on the concepts presented in her book, Power in Times of Uncertainty: Training Your Mind to Change Your Life, Dr. Petrella explains the two “mind modes” that people experience in times of uncertainty and she will provide a “training regimen” to put your mind, and thus your life, in a position of power.
About our Speaker:

Julie Petrella, Ph.D. has over thirteen years of experience in the human performance field, working in staff positions and as an independent consultant in both government organizations and private corporations. Her areas of expertise include corporate training and development, staff development, instructional systems design, and business process design. She began working fully as an independent consultant in 1997, and in 1999 she formed Bravo Systems, Inc., a consulting firm.
Dr. Petrella has an educational background that has given her both a breadth and depth of knowledge with regard to human learning and performance. Julie Petrella holds her Ph.D. in organizational systems. She also holds an M.Ed. in Adult Education with a specialization in Human Resources Development. Her Bachelor’s degree is in psychology, with a focus on social psychology. She was also trained in coaching and organization intervention by the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland.

Please make reservations by utilizing the on-line event reservation form or e-mailing Joy Hanson at jhanson@iamrrha.org. Please include "RVSHRM RSVP" in the subject line. Registration Deadline is Wednesday, June 20th.

President's Message
by Barbara Phelps

I hope you enjoyed our interactive May meeting, “Keeping Your Talent Engine On-Track”, and found it informative and helpful. Jan Hensley and Gail van Duursen’s guided us through an exercise to identify motivated skills and career values. This exercise may be useful as we think about our career development and career satisfaction.

If you are a SHRM member and have never used the Knowledge Center (formerly called the Information Center), you don’t know what you’re missing! It is surprising to find that some SHRM members are not aware of the Knowledge Center. It is one of the greatest benefits available! It is basically a call center staffed with ten certified HR professionals who are there to answer your questions. SHRM provides assistance with HR questions as a member benefit. This assistance is provided as general information and is not a substitute for legal or other professional advice.

Options for Requesting Assistance with an HR Question

By Phone: You can call them anytime the center is open (8:30 am to 8:30 pm ET), toll-free at 1-800-283-SHRM, option 5.

By “Live Help” Instant Message: Live Help is an interactive, one-to-one chat feature that connects you directly to a SHRM staff member for quick real-time assistance. It is provided for both customer service inquiries and quick answers to HR questions and is accessible during regular SHRM business hours (Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm ET). The link for instructions to use this service can be found at www.shrm.org/help/whatis.asp.

By Express Request: You'll find over 60 Express Request topics between the Express Request FAQ page and the Express Request Archive. To assist you in locating topics of interest, a brief description of each express request response is provided. Express Request responses are available around the clock! To learn more about Express Requests, go to www.shrm.org/hrresources/expressrequest.asp.

By Email: Use the form at www.shrm.org/hrresources/icrequest.asp to send an e-mail question to the Knowledge Center staff. If you do not receive an automatic response acknowledging your request, please be sure to check to see if you have a spam blocker activated or you may not be able to see the information we send when we do respond to your request.

To learn more about SHRM or become a member, go to www.shrm.org/join.

Special thanks to Joy Hanson - Arrangements and Debbie Honaker - Treasurer on handling registration for our members and guest each month. Thanks, for all you do.

I will be unable to attend the June membership meeting, but look forward to seeing all of you in July!

Board Meeting Minutes
by Sandy Hamilton

MAY 22, 2007

The following Board Members were in attendance:
Barbara Phelps, Sharon Bowers, Joy Hanson, Debbie Honaker, Jaime Martis, Becky Reynolds, Todd Leeson, Donna Tatum, Debbie Reid, Kim Carte, Lauren Prada, and Michelle Gynn

The meeting was called to order by Barbara Phelps, 2007 President.

Motion was made by Debbie Reid and seconded by Becky Reynolds to approve the minutes of the April 24, 2007, Board Meeting.  The motion passed.

Michelle Gynn reported that she and Barbara Phelps met with representatives from Virginia Western Community College to begin the process of chartering a Student Chapter.  Officers are being elected and will be reported to Michelle upon completion.

Sharon Bowers announced she will be taking over the Technology Chair and reminded the board to send changes, e-blast information and announcements to her.  David Wolfe will continue to assist as needed. She also stated that Beth, with Howling Dog, is looking into the possibilities of providing an HR service providers link to our website.  Sharon will keep the board informed.

Kim Carte has officially replaced Matt Duffy as Historian as Matt has retired. The board was very appreciative of all that Matt has done over the years.  Kim shared a scrapbook of pictures that Matt had taken and she will continue to add to the book with her new pictures.  Also, she presented a mock brochure RVSHRM brochure for board consideration that is a little more diversified than our current brochure.  The purpose is to help target other groups that may not be aware of our organization.  Donna Tatum will work with Kim on the new brochure.  Donna stated that this will be helpful in adding another panel to our Show board.

Further, Kim and Barbara Phelps will be visiting such organizations such as TAP and The West End Center as an on-going effort to grow our organization and offer our services to groups that may not necessarily be members but may find our expertise in human resources useful.

Lauren Prada reported that the Virginia SHRM Workforce Readiness Forum held in Richmond on April 26, 2007 was a success and well attended.  This forum was designed to review our future workforce and to find ways to ensure a competitive advantage for the 21st century, in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  There were many prestigious speakers in attendance, such as, The Honorable Thomas R. Morris, Secretary of Education, Steven Miranda, Chief Human Resource and Strategic Planning Officer for SHRM, Billy K. Cannaday, Jr., Superintendent of Public Instruction, and a video introduction from our Governor, Tim Kaine.

The main speaker, Ed Barlow’s, (President of Creating the Future, Inc.), presentation was designed to offer an understanding of the future and the influences which will affect organizations and the professional, as well as, personal settings.  Further discussion and follow-up will continue with those counties/cities that were in attendance.

Joy Hanson asked about certification of our monthly programs and Barbara Phelps stated that she will work with Jeff VanDoren to see what programs have been or will be certified and will report to the board at the next meeting.

Debbie Honaker reported that our accountants have filed for an extension concerning our chapter tax reporting.

Todd Leeson reported that he and his committee will be meeting soon and will be presenting legal updates/information to add to our website.

Barbara Phelps asked the Board to meet in July to discuss our Superior Merit Award to ensure that we are on target to meet the qualifications.  One criterion for qualification is to hold a meeting/presentation on legal issues. Todd Leeson will get with Jeff VanDoren to see if our January meeting qualifies.

Barbara Phelps also asked for the board to begin considering if they want to continue on the board for the 2008 year.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Sandy Hamilton, Secretary
