Why Harassment Charges Are Increasing At An Alarming Rate And What Employers Must Do

In order to reduce employer's liabilities from million dollar judgments, they must implement an Affirmative Defense and thoroughly train their managers and employees. Jack Smalley, SPHR will review some of the current social and legal background creating today's harassment issues and discuss ways to prepare an Affirmative Defense for your organization.

About the Speaker: Jack Smalley, SPHR is a career human resource professional and has experience in upper level management in a number of different industries such as oil, chemical and packaging with an emphasis in manufacturing, engineering, sales and logistics. President's Message
by Charlotte Mason

We’ve had some great programs so far this year in RVSHRM. I hope you’ve been able to attend both of them. And, we certainly have many more informative programs and events planned for the 2004 year.

We had a wonderful time in January celebrating our 50th anniversary. There were many memories and some laughs shared by the group. Thanks to those of you who weathered the winter elements to attend the celebration.

In February, we learned of the many issues facing employees and employers as they deal with eldercare issues. The speaker from Generation Solutions shared valuable information and facts related to the elderly population and the caregivers employed by our local employers. I have been participating in the Roanoke Partnership for Employed Caregivers that plans to find ways to provide information and resources to employers. This information and the resources would assist employees who are serving as caregivers and must balance their time between caregiving activities and full-time employment. If you are interested in being involved in this initiative, please contact me at 774-9705.

In addition to the valuable and beneficial topics at our monthly meetings, RVSHRM is co-sponsoring the following seminar: 2004 Gentry Locke Rakes Moore Labor/Employment Symposium on April 8 at Hotel Roanoke. RVSHRM members will receive a discount to attend this seminar.

Check your newsletter each month for full details on the program topics. And, please mark your calendar for the fourth Tuesday of each month for the RVSHRM meetings. We feel we have a variety of topics that will be of interest to our membership. And, we are also planning to have some programs that will qualify for SHRM recertification credits.

Board Meeting Minutes
by Sharon Bowers

Notes from Board Meeting
February 24, 2004

The following 2004 Board members were in attendance: Charlotte Mason, Sarah Wilson, Mike Leach, Ben Bowman, Thomas Engl, Joy Hanson, Barbara Phelps, Dan Oyler, Beth Pinson and Sharon Bowers

Topics discussed:

Charlotte Mason opened the meeting and asked Sherry Buckner to review the Treasurer’s report. It was reviewed and accepted by the Board.

Mike Leach reported that the current, paid to date, membership was 205. He further noted that he would be reviewing the list to verify active national membership as our Chapter is a 100% Chapter. Sherry Buckner reminded the Board of the Membership Scholarship Fund that set aside for those individuals who need assistance in paying their national dues. Interested parties must contact Mike.

Ben Bowman previewed the topics for the remaining programs of the year. Mike Leach suggested that we consider expanding the annual CEO breakfast to a 2 or 3-hour strategic management session. Ben will investigate the possibility. He will also continue to research ways to allow for the monthly luncheon meetings to be certified for credit hours. There was further discussion to send out a broadcast email as a reminder of our monthly meetings with the goal of improving attendance.

Charlotte Mason discussed the need for Directors & Officers Liability Insurance. The Board approved and accepted a proposal for coverage with MIMS International as reviewed by Thomas Engl.

Charlotte Mason advised the Board that SHRM has produced a HR Role Model DVD video. After some discussion concerning the use, such as loaning it to our Student Chapter, the Board approved the purchase.

Beth Pinson reported that the Workforce Readiness Committee was excited about their partnership with Patrick Henry. Guest speakers and other activities have been planned.

Are You or Your Employees
Part of the “Sandwich Generation?"

Find out more about the Roanoke Partnership for Employed Caregivers a developing resource for employed caregivers in the Roanoke Valley.

Project Overview

Roanoke Partnership for Employed Caregivers was formed in an effort to respond to alarming trends in the population of employed caregivers. The partnership seeks to bring together representatives from the private, public, and non-profit sectors to identify and address the economic impact to employers and the challenges that employed caregivers face and to provide supportive tools to the employers and the employees to help them meet these challenges. The idea would incorporate two major components: educating the employers and employees and providing information and resources to employers and employees. The model, designed to be low-to-no cost asks partners to provide an investment of time and perhaps a small amount of in-kind service.

The Partnership is looking to RVSHRM members to be involved in some of their strategic objectives, which include:

• Pulling together local partners in the Roanoke area that would contribute their expertise and advice.

• Creating and implementing a campaign to educate employers about the economic, physical, and emotional impact of care giving. Help them to redefine “family friendly employer” beyond supporting an employee with a sick child to include helping the employee with the mother who has Alzheimer’s.

• Providing tools to the employers to reverse the economic impact.

• Designing a series of four brown bag lunch seminars that would be held on four consecutive Wednesdays at a donated site in downtown Roanoke, convenient to local business employees.

• Providing on-going tools to employed caregivers that support them in their roles.

• Surveying the participants to measure value of information received and evaluating success of the program.

Workforce Readiness

Our committee continues to compliment many of the wonderful things that focus on Workforce Development that are already going on. We continue to be on the Workforce Advocacy Board at the Chamber. The Chamber is focusing on the business dinners program for 2004. This program brings educators and businesses together. The goal is to keep the educators fresh with the skills that are needed in different workplaces. The businesses that are chosen are for the most part from a 5 cluster industry group.

Beginning Monday March 1st we will be working with the students at PH to assist them in "Improving the Quality of our School" If you will remember, the group of students we work with do not like the press their school gets, and they do believe there are too many fights at their school. They want to make a difference and they want to start with the student body. We are as business influences going to help them write a plan for success, set goals, teach them how to implement the plan, measure their success and much more. We would love to have you be a part of this effort as we are breaking into different groups to accomplish different things. Next month our goal is to bring 2 students to the SHRM lunch to experience a business meeting, as we did last year. Please call me at 989-3562 for more information.

The Roanoke Chapter Sponsors Memberships

In 2004, the Roanoke Chapter will sponsor memberships for several HR Professionals whose employers do not fund their National and Local SHRM memberships. Through these one-year memberships, the Chapter hopes to better serve the community and to reach persons engaged daily in the field of HR who may not currently be participating in the either organization.

Recipients of the Chapter-sponsored memberships will be expected to pay their own fees for the Chapter’s monthly luncheons and other events. They will not be identified to Chapter members as recipients of sponsored memberships.

Persons interested in applying for the one-year membership should submit the following items as soon as possible:

· Letter of interest, describing their current position and the
benefits they hope to receive from National and Local
  SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer that includes
confirmation their memberships will not be employer-paid.

If you’re interested, please contact Barbara Phelps, Matt Duffy, or Debra Lovelace. Funds available for this new program are limited, so you are encouraged to act promptly to ensure your request is fully considered.
