“Unexpected Lessons”
A Case Study in Outsourcing at Best Western International
Dennis Myers
Pinnacle Services, LLC

Dennis Myers, President of Pinnacle Services, L.L.C and former Director of HR for Best Western International, will present a case study discussion of an outsourcing project for which he was the HR project leader while at Best Western International in Phoenix, Arizona.

While there were many important lessons learned, there was one critical issue that he and his team discovered: There are no readily available resources for the internal, or “outsourc-er”, HR team. There were a lot of lessons in managing relationships, communication, the press, cultural conflicts and a multitude of details that come with such a business change.

To make things more complex, Best Western International’s decision to outsource was actually three simultaneous initiatives, with three different vendors and three different project timelines. The project was launched nine months of the original plan and impacted 40% of employees at BWI’s corporate headquarters.

What Dennis and his team thought was a nightmare – and felt like for some time – turned out to be a great learning experience. Dennis says, “It’s was a pretty unique moment in my career when I found myself recommending to my CEO that my job was one that should be cut. It builds character, but I want to keep in the ‘do not repeat’ box.”

Please make reservations by utilizing the event reservation form or e-mailing Joyce Kessinger at jkessinger@boxley.com. Please include "RVSHRM RSVP November" in the subject line. Registration Deadline is Wednesday, March 22nd.

President’s Message
March 2006

If you missed our February meeting you missed a very informative and fun meeting. "Cupid and the Cubicle", presented by Dan and Betsy with Woods Rogers, opened up many ideas and questions concerning relationships in the workplace. And thanks to our membership for participating! It's good to hear how other companies handle situations. Also, we want to thank Beth and Lauren with Adecco for bringing our three guests, students from William Byrd, to our meeting. It was wonderful to see these young men and hear how well our Workforce Readiness program is working! If you are interested in working with the students, please let Lauren know.

I wanted to utilize the March message as a reminder of what's going on with our Chapter and how you can get involved. First, don't forget to contact Dan Oyler with ITT Industries if you are interested in registering for the Essentials of HR class to be held in May. Remember that our Chapter's committees have been working hard planning for our 2006 events. Now is the time to participate and maximize the value of your membership. Please review the list of committees and make a decision to be a part. If you have questions feel free to contact me and I will put you in touch with the right person. Also, don't forget to register for the State Conference to be held at the Hotel Roanoke this year. Contact Dan Semones or Barbara Phelps if you have questions.

Finally, remember to utilize SHRM website for your questions and needs. It is amazing to me just how helpful this site is and the wealth of information available.

Thank you again! Remember, you only get out of this organization what you are willing to put into it.

See you on the 28th!

Sharon Bowers

Debbie Honaker, Treasurer, reported that a person has been engaged to file our tax return by May 15, 2006. Two volunteers are needed for the annual audit. Motion was made by Dan Oyler and seconded by Matt Duffy to allocate $3,000 of profits from the 2006 State Conference to balance the annual budget. Motion was carried.

A discussion was held regarding changes that need to be made to the RVSHRM website. Sharon Bowers noted the following items:

4. The last item is “Return to the Front” – has Sarah Wilson’s Welcome Letter.
    Sharon needs to change.
5. Need to change the Superior Merit Award and add that we are Chapter Champions, 2005.

Board Members were asked to review the website and send changes to David Wolfe.

Sharon Bowers reported for Donna Moses on ways to recruit members-at-large. A list of members-at-large will be sent to Sharon and shared with other Board Members. A meeting could be planned for next year to recruit members-at-large.

We agreed to pay the local and national dues for Gail McGee of the Roanoke College Student Chapter. This expenditure has been budgeted for 2006.

Kathy Claytor reported that Student Chapter members have expressed an interest in attending state and/or national conferences and asked for refreshments at meetings. Kathy was asked to submit a list of needs for the Student Chapter at the next meeting.

Dan Semones reported on the 2006 State Conference. Our website link gives details on the State Conference. The theme is “Get the Skills and Connections you need to brighter your future in HR – Reach for the Stars.” Five hundred people are expected to attend the conference. Sponsorship interest is high and keynote speakers have been secured. The Clarion and Wyndham have contracts for additional rooms. Volunteers are needed for the conference. College students will be asked to help with the conference in exchange for a free registration. Golf shirts are suggested for the conference volunteers. A book written by a keynote speaker will be raffled off prior to the conference to promote interest.

Johna Campbell reported that the topic for today’s meeting is “Cupid in the Cubicle.” Tap-This Valley Works and Met-Life are our exhibitors. Dennis Myers will present a program on outsourcing HR in March and a speaker from the SHRM Foundation will present the program in April.

Sharon Bowers announced that the refund check from SHRM should be received soon. The state magazine is asking for submission of articles, announcements, etc. from our chapter. “CEO Exchange” is available for members use. Information about the “CEO Exchange” can be found at www.pbs.org\stationfinder\.com. A PowerPoint presentation is available on what is new in SHRM. This presentation will be featured at one of our meetings.

Dan Oyler announced that RVSHRM will co-sponsor a seminar with the VEC on March 4th. Board Members are invited to attend the next meeting of the VA Workforce on March 24th at 7:45 p.m.

Three students from William Byrd High School will be introduced at today’s meeting.

Sharon Bowers announced Becky Reynolds’ mother passed away. Flowers were sent from the Chapter, and a thank you note has been received.

Debbie Reid suggested those members introducing guests should be asked to introduce themselves first and then the guest.

There being no future business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Sandy Hamilton, Secretary

benefits they hope to receive from National and Local
  SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer that includes
confirmation their memberships will not be employer-paid
