"The Art and Science of Structured Interviewing"
Presented by Dr. Mike Aamodt
Department of Psychology, Radford University

Though research is clear that the traditional employment interview results in adverse impact and does not actually predict performance, research is equally clear that structured interviews are the best predictor of employee performance and rarely result in adverse impact. This presentation will discuss the strengths of structured interviews as well as how to create them.

As a teacher, Mike teaches courses in employee selection, employee training and development, job analysis and evaluation, organizational politics, organizational influence, forensic psychology, program evaluation, and psychology of the criminal mind.

As a consultant, Mike has helped a wide variety of organizations deal with such issues as employee selection, performance evaluation, downsizing, organizational change, compensation, salary equity, affirmative action, and employee motivation. As a trainer, Mike is a frequently requested speaker and is known for his fast-paced, humorous presentations.

Please make reservations by utilizing the on-line event reservation form or e-mailing Joy Hanson at jhanson@iamrrha.org. Please include "RVSHRM RSVP" in the subject line. Registration Deadline is Wednesday, March 21st.

President's Message
by Barbara Phelps

RVSHRM is off to a great start. We’ve had two very informative meetings this year and looking forward to gaining more information as the year moves forward.

Coy Renick shared with us some tips on “Recruiting Techniques for Hiring the Best”. As HR professionals we are aware that the job market is very competitive and finding the right candidate is more challenging than ever. Coy, thank you for the tips on finding candidates and reminding us that it’s ok to “think outside the box” when recruiting.

In our February meeting Johna Campbell asked our membership for donations of “gently used” business clothing for Total Action Against Poverty-TAP. Anyone wishing to donate please bring your items to the March 27, 2007 luncheon meeting and someone will be there to pick up your donations.

As a reminder TAP will host their 9th Annual Job fair on April 3, 2007 at the Roanoke Civic Center. RVSHRM is a sponsor of this event.

We currently have an open position on our RVSHRM Board for Chair-Newsletter. If you have an interest in the position please give me a call (540) 345-5747.

Don’t forget our monthly meetings - 4th Tuesday of each month, so plan on joining us March 27, 2007 at noon. I look forward to seeing you there.

Board Meeting Minutes
by Sandy Hamilton

February 27, 2007

The following Board Members were in attendance:
Barbara Phelps, Becky Reynolds, Donna Tatum, Debbie Honaker, Jeff VanDoren, Johna Campbell, Matt Duffy, Joy Hanson, Lauren Prada, Kim Carte, Todd Leeson, Sandy Hamilton, Debbie Reid, and Sharon Bowers.

The meeting was called to order by Barbara Phelps, 2007 President.

Motion was made by Sharon Bowers and seconded by Donna Tatum to approve the minutes of the January 23, 2007, Board Minutes. The motion was passed.

Barbara Phelps announced that the website has been updated with only a few changes left to be made.

Becky Reynolds requested that the Marketing Committee’s annual budget be increased from $700 to $3,200 to reflect $2,500 allowance for HR orientation functions
to be held throughout the year. Becky also requested that Board Members make a real effort to greet guests at each meeting. The possibility of a survey of members was discussed, but it was decided to review the 2004 survey before scheduling a new survey.
Sandy Hamilton will fax Becky a copy of the 2004 survey.

Joy Hanson reported that parking at Hotel Roanoke has increased from $1 to $3 per car. The Board asked Joy to attempt to negotiate the fee increase with Town Park.
Joy also reported that the Hotel can only accommodate 63 in the Appalachian Room for the September meeting. The Board suggested we consider changing the CEO breakfast to September and change locations for the meeting (Hidden Valley Country Club?).

Lauren Prada reported that the Workforce Readiness is working with the Governor’s Scholarship Program in addition to its regular work with the schools. Lauren will attend the State Workforce Committee meeting. She requested $750 for the Workforce Readiness 2007 budget.

Donna Tatum reported that we received the Foundation’s Chapter Champion award. A discussion was held concerning advertising for the monthly meetings. Donna is to continue advertising in the Blue Ridge Business Journal, Roanoke Times, Salem Times, Roanoke Regional Chapter e-blast, Roanoke Tribune and add Downtown Roanoke, Inc. at a cost of $50-$75. 2007 expenses for the Marketing Committee include preparation of the third panel of our booth and printing additional Roanoke Chapter brochures and letterhead. Donna asked the Program Committee to submit monthly program topics early enough to place in the advertising. Monthly drawing for the foundation will continue. A discussion was held regarding continuing the Silent Auction in December. One major event must be held for the Foundation to qualify for the Chapter Champion Award. If the Silent Auction or other program is held in December, a time change may be considered to encourage more participation. Barbara Phelps asked that Board Members be prepared at next month’s meeting to give ideas for the December meeting.

Donna Tatum also asked that RVSHRM help sponsor the Western Virginia Workforce Development Board’s presentation, “Other Ways to Win,” with a $1,000 donation. Motion was made by Sharon Bowers and seconded by Matt Duffy to approve the $1,000 donation to be included in the Workforce Readiness’ budget. The motion was passed.

Matt Duffy will be taking pictures of new Board Members at today’s meeting.

Bruce Johannsen will be given three minutes at today’s meeting to introduce the “Other Ways to Win” April 17th event.

Todd Leeson requested a $2,000 budget for the Legislative Conferences.

Sharon Bowers requested an additional $1,000 for the State Council Meetings, and Barbara Phelps and Debbie Honaker will discuss additional budget for the Leadership Conferences.

Barbara Phelps presented Debbie Honaker with a $1,993 check for membership.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted.
Sandy Hamilton, Secretary
