What
Makes a Great Place to Work®?
Ms. Connie Roy-Czyzowski
Vice President of Human Resources for Northeast
Delta Dental
At the heart of the
definition of a great place to work - a place
where employees "trust the people they work for,
have pride in what they do, and enjoy the people
they work with" - is the idea that a great
workplace is measured by the quality of the
three, interconnected relationships that exist
there:
The relationship between employees and management.
The relationship between employees and their
jobs/company.
The relationship between employees and other employees.
Roanoke Valley SHRM is pleased to sponsor our
May speaker, Ms. Connie Roy-Czyzowski, Vice
President of Human Resources for Northeast Delta
Dental.
Connie has led the culture change initiative at
her 200 (+/-) employee company which has
resulted in their national recognition as a
Great Place to Work, several years in a row. As
competition becomes tougher to recruit and
retain talent, organizations who distinguish
themselves as a Great Place to Work will have an
edge. Please join us on Tuesday, May 23, as
Connie describes some of Northeast Delta
Dental's best practices. We will also hear more
about the Great Places to Work recognition
endorsed by SHRM for small - medium size
employers.
Please
make reservations by utilizing the event
reservation form or e-mailing Joyce Kessinger at jkessinger@boxley.com.
Please include "RVSHRM RSVP May" in the
subject line.
Registration Deadline
is Wednesday, May 17th.

President’s Message
April 2006
It’s May already and haven’t we gotten off to a
great start?!
I hope you were able to attend our April meeting
and found it as informative and fun as I did.
Karen Silberman, Executive Director for the SHRM
Foundation shared an exciting video about
Yahoo’s hiring practices and how they became an
employer of choice. There was great
participation from our members, as well as
guests, by the way. It’s always good to hear
others’opinions and ideas.
Karen also shared a bit about the benefits of
the SHRM Foundation. Consider:
1. The Foundation funded over $1 million in
original academic research over
the past decade.
2. Has awarded $50,000 each year in education
and certification scholarships
to working SHRM members through the Regional Scholarship
Program.
3. Awarded $20,000 annually in dissertation
awards to promising doctoral students.
4. And, has created online directories of more
than 140 graduate and 260 undergraduate
HR degree programs to assist HR professionals while selecting
an academic program.
There were actually about 10 benefits that she
listed but you get the picture. This is why we
hold our raffle each meeting. You can see that
the money goes to a good cause.
Specials thanks to National College of Business
and Technology for sponsoring our meeting. The
IPod that they brought for their drawing was a
very nice giveaway!
Please mark those calendars for the May meeting
and don’t forget to register for the State
Conference, if you haven’t already.
See you soon!
Respectfully submitted,
Sharon Bowers

SHRM members working full-time and pursuing HR
degrees or professional certification. New for
2006! Four academic scholarships of $1300 each

send the Foundation instead of purchasing the
prize. We will continue doing 50/50 drawings
when we don’t have a prize. Contact me if you
can contribute an item. It would be greatly
appreciated.

Chapter’s monthly luncheons and other events.
They will not be identified to Chapter members
as recipients of sponsored memberships.

benefits they hope to receive from National
and Local
SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer

confirmation their memberships will not be
employer-paid
