“A Team-Based Approach to Workplace Violence Prevention”
Presented by Ken Redick, CEAP, CAC, CSAC
Carilion EAP Manager

Sadly, incidents of workplace violence appear to be becoming more prevalent in the modern workplace. As HR professionals, we must learn how to deal with and diffuse these tense situations. This interactive program will be lead by RVSHRM member Ken Redick who will:

• Educate participants of the actual facts of U.S. workplace violence.
• Identify what causes workplace anger and assist supervisors to reflect on their supervisory styles.
• Identify the performance warning signs of the troubled employee.
• Identify the types of threats and the types of behaviors that constitute violent or possible violent actions.
• Teach steps that supervisors can take to avoid and/or diffuse violence.
• Define “stalking behaviors” and characteristics of “stalkers” for increased awareness and intervention.
• Review steps HR, supervisors and EAP's can take to use threat assessment teams effectively.

About our Speaker:

Currently the manager of the Carilion Employee Assistance Program, Ken Redick has been in the counseling field for 20 years. Ken’s specialty areas include corporate training, conflict resolution, performance coaching and team building consultations.

A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, Ken provides 110 client companies management consultation and training. He is a Certified Addictions Counselor, a Certified Employee Assistance Professional and EAP Coaching Specialist.

Ken is currently focusing his training efforts on ways management and employees can effectively build motivated teams while dealing with negativity and workplace stress. He is in training to become an executive life coach, creating a powerful alliance designed to forward and enhance the lifelong process of learning, effectiveness and fulfillment in his clients.

Please make reservations by utilizing the on-line event reservation form or e-mailing Joy Hanson at jhanson@iamrrha.org. Please include "RVSHRM RSVP" in the subject line. Registration Deadline is Thursday, May 22, 2008.

***IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT CONCERNING MEETING RESERVATIONS***

All reservations for the monthly meeting are required to be made by the Friday before the meeting. The Hotel Roanoke wants our final count on Friday and is not lenient with late additions. We can not accept any reservations past the Friday deadline. It is at the discretion of the individual to arrive on meeting day without a reservation and wait to possibly take the spot of a “no show.”

Thank you for your cooperation.

President's Message
by Johna Campbell

Great things are happening in the HR Community!

One of the challenges of serving as the President of RVHSRM is the amount of information that comes in and needs to be disseminated.  In this letter, I want to simply offer you some highlights of information, events and opportunities that may interest you.

I am pleased to announce that SHRM has awarded the Superior Merit Chapter designation to the RVSHRM for its scope of work in perpetuating and supporting the mission of the organization in 2007.  Congratulations to all RVHSRM members!  This honor goes out to the entire group.  The direct and indirect efforts of many members contributed to our success.

The Workforce Readiness event held in Richmond was a success.  We had 410 participants and Governor Kaine was able to attend.  As always, I am extremely proud of RVSHRM’s accomplishments in the Workforce Readiness arena in particular…..  Lauren Prada and her workforce readiness committee members including Liz Fitzgerald, Evelyn Rudisill, Debbie Reid, Sonya Payne, Brooke Perry, and Amy Fulton continue to build bridges into the local school system.  So far this year, they’ve held events in William Byrd, Salem High School and Roanoke County Insight Program.  We plan to submit a story on this team’s efforts in response to SHRM’s request for Enterprising Leadership stories.  Lauren is always seeking individuals who want to participate in the school events.  Please call her if you have an interest in being involved.

Steve Miranda both educated and entertained 110 RVSHRM members and guests at the April meeting with his presentation titled “The Quick and the Dead:  HR Strategies for the New Millennium”.  I’ve attached his PowerPoint presentation.  I hope, when you look at the “deadly sins” you won’t see yourself or your HR department in many categories!
As I talk to members, I know that many Roanoke Valley organizations are doing great things.  Now is your time to shine!  SHRM is seeking nominations for The Human Capital Leadership Awards 2008.  Categories are:  Strategic HR Leadership, Innovative Business Solution Award, Competitive Workforce Award, and Human Capital Business Leader of the Year Award.  I urge you to consider seeking this recognition for your team’s efforts.  Who knows, maybe you’ll make all your employees proud!
I bet you didn’t know:  SHRM has a regional scholarship program for national members.  Two categories of scholarships are available; certification ($750) and academic ($1,375).  Our region will give away 12 certification scholarships and 8 academic scholarships this year.  The deadline to participate is July 18th.

Update on the Salary Survey:  57 RVSHRM and TMA member companies participated in the WCI/TMA survey.  WCI/TMA will work hard to crunch the data and the final report will be available by July 4th.  Please plan to attending an update meeting/workshop on understanding the reports as well as gaining perspective on how these numbers can be particularly useful to your organization in our labor market.  More information on this workshop will be available in early June.

As the 2008 SHRM National Conference draws near, I would like to compile a list of RVSHRM members who plan to attending.  With 15,000 conference attendees, it is not likely that we’ll see one another if we don’t plan in advance.  And let’s face it, conferences are always more fun when you are surrounded by friends!

Regards,

Johna Campbell

5 - Cinco de Mayo (Mexico) commemorates the May 5, 1862 Battle of Puebla  in which General Ignacio Zaragoza's Mexican troops defeated Napolean III's French forces.  Many people confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Independence Day (September 16, 1810). Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the United States than in Mexico and many people of Mexican descent celebrate with parades, music, and dancing.

18 - Isreal's Independence Day (Yom Ha'Atzma'Ut)

19 - Malcolm X's birthday (African-American, United States) The third Sunday in May marks the celebration of Malcolm X Day. Born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, Malcolm X became one of the most outspoken and popular leaders of the black nationalist movement in the 1960s. Malcolm X Day is celebrated in most major American cities, including Washington, D. C. where festivities draw about 75,000 people to Anacostia Park.
