November 25, 2003
The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center
Registration: 11:30 a.m.
Networking: 11:30 a.m. - Noon
Lunch: Noon
Program immediately following lunch.
Topic:
Best Practices in Diversity
Presented
by a Panel from the RVSHRM Diversity Committee
The panel
will highlight leading examples of diversity programs
and initiatives in the region. Panel members will
also facilitate discussion among the membership
regarding diversity issues and strategies for
improvement among member organizations.
The responses we received to the "diversity" questions in the 2003 RVSHRM Member Survey indicated our collective understanding of the subject could use a little work. Although Roanoke has much in common with other small Southern cities, its diverse economy, and multiple races, cultures, nationalities and religions give it a diversity that few Southern cities of its size can match. This month's program will focus on diversity--what it is, what it is not and its value to the Valley's workplaces.
Please
make reservations by Wednesday, November 19 by
utilizing the event
reservation form or e-mailing Anita Hassell ahassell@co.roanoke.va.us
- please include "RVSHRM RSVP" in the
subject line.

What would you be doing if you were not afraid?
If you were not afraid, would you be in another job? Relationship? Social circle? Wearing different clothes? Driving a different car? Living in another city? A different country?
Would you be championing a new policy? Standing up for an underdog? Taking a public stand? Running for office? Pulling back from public life? Pursuing a long-held dream?
I listened recently to a single mother as she related to me the details of her pursuit of a job located a couple of thousand miles from Roanoke. There was a hint of fear in her eyes and voice, but only a hint. The predominant emotion she displayed was excitement—over the prospect of new responsibilities, new challenges, new coworkers, higher pay, new friends and new surroundings.
As I listened to her, I could not help but marvel at her courage and how it contrasted with what I often have seen in the eyes of persons facing the prospect of significant change. While she is aware of the risks of such a move, she also is aware of the potential gains for herself and her child. She is practicing a skill with which many of us struggle: Focusing on the positive and allowing its power to energize us.
Many of us live lives dominated not by visions of great things that will be ours if we succeed, but by nightmares of horrible things we might suffer if we fail. Fortunately for us, the majority of those dreadful things never occur, but they do impact our lives nonetheless. The fear of what might happen drains the courage and creative energy from us.
In this respect, we are not unique. Many of the men and women with whom we work each day feel the same. Their education levels, economic realities and social histories lead them to suspect change and cling to what they know, even if it’s not too special.
So what? So what if everyone is a little (or a lot) afraid of change? You already know the answer: On the personal level, opportunities are lost; on the organizational level, change intiatives are delayed, costs rise, talent leaves and competitive advantage is lost. No one wins—not the individual, not the organization, not the customer, not the stockholder, not the public. No one.
As we respond to steady pressure to accomplish more, faster, with less, let’s not lose sight of the fact that bringing others along with us, rather than moving over them or around them, almost always produces better results for the organization. Sure, doing so takes time, but cleaning up the mess that results when we don’t do it almost always takes more time.
We can force change upon persons, but doing so is like squeezing a coil spring: The spring get shorter, but at a cost. Tire of keeping it squeezed and it may get you. (I have experience with this--I’m still looking for that little A/C vent spring that launched itself out of my hand about a month ago. I’m so thankful it did not hit me in the eye!)
Have a great November!

"The Real Cost of Turnover"
Should we be measuring turnover at all? A thought-provoking article on the topic is available in the Members' Resources section of

PHRs & SPHRs
Everything You Need to Know About
Computer-Based Testing
Beginning in May 2004, the PHR and SPHR exams will be offered in a computer- based testing
(CBT) format. Following is information about the new CBT program:
• Exam content will not change. Mastering the HR body of knowledge continues to be the best way to prepare for exam success. The existing HRCI Certification Guide accurately outlines the test specifications and HR body of knowledge.
• Computer-based testing was chosen in response to examinees' requests for consistent, stable testing environments; immediate results and greater choice in dates and locations.
• The exams will still be offered twice a year. Instead of just one date per exam administration, an eight-week exam "window" will be available for each exam. The Spring/Summer PHR and SPHR exams may be taken between May 1 and June 30. The Fall/Winter exams may be taken between mid-November and mid-January.
• Online exam registration procedures will not change significantly. Once candidates receive notification that they are eligible to take the exam, they will be directed by letter to schedule their exam at a Prometric test center near them. This may be done either online or by phone, and instructions will be included in the Admission-to-Test letter that they will receive. Candidates should definitely register and schedule their exams as early as possible, since the test centers also schedule test-takers for many other exams.
• At the test center, candidates will be able to take a self-paced tutorial before starting the exam. The tutorial is designed to familiarize test-takers with the computer and show them how to read questions and indicate responses. The tutorial will not be counted in the four hours allotted to complete the exam.
• A "virtual tour" of a Prometric test center is available online. The tutorial may be accessed through the
"CBT Corner" of
www.hrci.org.) The latest information about computer-based PHR and SPHR exams is found in the
"CBT Corner" of the HRCI web site.
