The
Many Challenges of Diversity in 2005 and Beyond
Presented By
Mel Asbury, SPHR Management
Consultant, Senior VP of Human Resources for SpectraSite
Communications Inc. and an affiliate of the HR Group.
Today's workplace is
changing dramatically as more women, minorities and
other groups move into all levels of positions in the
workforce, including executive, managerial, technical,
and professional jobs. The traditional ways of operating
are being rethought and scrutinized. In addition, the
customer base of today's organization has become
increasingly more diverse. Relationship building among
co-workers, and also when dealing with customers, has
become more critical to succeeding as an organization
yet also more complex. Different groups have different
diversity issues that are important to them. Therefore,
it has become increasingly important for Human Resources
professionals to know how to design and implement a
successful diversity initiative. This lunch presentation
will focus on the major components of a diversity
initiative and the lessons learned in implementing one.
Please
make reservations by utilizing the event
reservation form or e-mailing Joyce Kessinger at jkessinger@boxley.com.
Please include "RVSHRM RSVP November" in the
subject line.
Registration Deadline
is Wednesday, November 16th.

President’s Message
November 2005
I want to thank Steve Zimmerman for his
thoroughly delightful discussion of “Career
Planning for HR Professionals” at our October
membership meeting. This was particularly timely
for me, as I have decided to relocate to the
coastal area of North/South Carolina, while
finishing up my MBA from Walden University.
In my personal job search I am finding that the
first things that attracts employers to my
resume is my professional certification
designation (SPHR) and my volunteer leadership
positions with RVSHRM. In this day and age of
downsizing, right sizing, and just plain ‘ole
resume building experiences, don’t miss the
opportunity to enhance your resume, with the
ability to put on your resume leadership
positions not only in the local SHRM chapter,
but other leadership positions in the community.
And there are numerous opportunities in the
Roanoke Valley.
Beth Pinson on the RVSHRM web site has listed an
opportunity to help our high school students
understand what it takes to be a good employee,
just 10 minutes a week of your time, will help
ensure that you do not get that applicant in
your office in pajamas and bedroom slippers.
Call Beth Pinson or Lauren Prada at 989-1672 or
556-8738 if you are interested in shaping and
molding tomorrow’s workforce.
Or how about the Partnership for Employed
Caregivers, they are looking for HR
professionals to go into businesses and meet
with ---your peers other HR professionals—to
provide tools for the employer and employee to
find resources for eldercare when they are most
needed. Contact Charlotte Mason at 774-9705 if
you have an interest in this opportunity.
Training is provided.
These are just two of the things that our
members are involved in and they need
volunteers. There are many others, if these do
not interest you contact someone on the Board
listed on the web site and they can put you in
touch with other opportunities.
Being active in the Chapter is to your
advantage. The CEO of my organization as he
looks at resumes for my replacement, the first
thing he wants to know is if they are active in
the chapter. This is important to him, because
he knows that if they are they are on top of
their game and are connected to the larger HR
Community. I don’t think he is alone in that
thinking.
Too busy to come to meetings and get involved?
When you are in the marketplace looking for that
dream job, not being involved, not having the
network will be to your disadvantage.
As I say at the end of every President’s
message. This is your professional organization.
You will only get out of it what you put into
it. This is critical for your professional
development and marketability. Take it from
someone who knows.
See you in November
Sarah

Sarah Wilson, 2005 President, called the
meeting to order.
Motion was made by Sharon Bowers and
seconded by Joyce Kessinger to approve the
September 20, 2005, Board Minutes. Motion
was carried.
Debbie Honaker and Kathy Claytor reported
that a request has been submitted to Roanoke
College for an intern for the accounting
project. Debbie may have an alternate
solution if an intern cannot be found. A
January 2006 target date has been set for
the accounting project.
Sharon
Bowers presented the Slate of Officers
for 2006:
President – Sharon Bowers
President Elect – Barbara Phelps
Treasurer – Debbie Honaker
Secretary – Sandy Hamilton
VP Programs – Johna Campbell
VP Arrangements – Joyce Kessinger
VP Membership – Donna Moses
Professional Certification – Dan Oyler
Legislative Affairs – Bruce Wood
Marketing – Donna Tatum
Historian – Matt Duffy
Student Chapter – Kathy Claytor
Newsletter Editor – Joy Hanson
Diversity – Phill Peters
Workforce Readiness – Lauren Prada
Technology – David Wolfe
Immediate past President – Sarah Wilson
Joyce Kessinger was commended for the
e-blast sent to the membership regarding
registration. Joyce presented the e-blast
announcing price increases for the monthly
luncheon meetings effective January 1, 2006.
Motion was made by Sharon Bowers and
seconded by Dan Semones to approve this
e-blast. Motion was carried.
Johna Campbell announced the following
programs for the remaining months of 2005:
October – Career Planning for HR
Professionals
November – Diversity
December – Holiday Social at Jefferson
Center, December 13th, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.,
featuring a Silent Auction.
After some discussion, motion was made by
Joyce Kessinger and seconded by Sharon
Bowers to conduct a survey at today’s
meeting to ascertain interest in the
December holiday social, plan the event
based on interest, hold a Silent Auction and
charge $15 for members with one free guest.
Motion was carried.
Johna Campbell noted that her study of the
membership indicated that 50% of the members
did not attend any meeting and 18% only
attended one meeting. The option of some
breakfast meetings for 2006 will be
explored.
Donna Tatum distributed coasters used at the
2005 State Conference. The booth used at the
State Conference will be displayed at
today’s meeting. Donna is working on the
logo and letterhead. The Committee for the
Foundation will be contacting businesses and
individuals for donations for the Silent
Auction.
Donna Moses reported 259 members with 6 new
members. Donna is awaiting responses from
chapters who are participating in joint
billing. The one response received was
positive. Donna met with the Membership
Committee regarding the 2006 dues billing. A
list of active and inactive members was
reviewed by the Board.
Lauren Prada announced volunteers are still
needed for the Workforce Readiness
Committee. Training will be provided for
volunteers. After much discussion, it was
the general consensus that the RVSHRM group
would have to decline the request for our
members to assist in a prison release
training program. The time involved is too
extensive for our group to undertake at this
time.
David Wolfe announced that he has been in
touch with Dan Semones, Patti Dickerson and
Beth Garst regarding technology. The next
project will focus on web cleanup and
redesign.
Charlotte Mason reported on the progress of
the Partnership for Employed Caregivers.
Materials are ready for employers and
employees. Volunteers are needed to
distribute materials and make presentations
to employers and groups.
Sharon Bowers presented the change for HRCI
programs.
Sarah Wilson and Sharon Bowers will meet to
review the President’s checklist.
Johna Campbell would like to see more
recognition for HR professionals earning
their designations.
There being no further business, the meeting
was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandy Hamilton
RVSHRM Secretary

Inflation impacts RVSHRM
The
RVSHRM Board of Directors regrets to announce a
price increase for the monthly lunch meetings
for 2006. The Hotel Roanoke had found it
necessary to increase the cost of the lunches
for 2005; however, the board decided to monitor
the situation and absorb the additional cost
during this year before making a decision as to
how much of an increase is needed.
Beginning with the January 2006 meeting members
will be charged $20.00 while guests will pay
$25.00 per meeting. The new rate will include
parking passes for those attendees who need them
and will cover any fixed costs for each meeting
such as audio-visual equipment needed for the
program.
THE I-9 PROCESS IN A NUTSHELL
There is an Employer Information Bulletin 102 which supplements the 1991 version of the "Handbook for Employers" (Form M-274) and the 1991 version of the of the I-9 instructions and form, which may both be downloaded from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. The address is
www.uscis.gov. (Use the search box for Office of Business Liaison, then Services and Benefits)
This bulletin is published by the Office of Business Liaison, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (formerly the I.N.S.), Department of Homeland Security.
Christmas, Fundraising and Fun!
December is fast
approaching and the SHRM Foundation needs your
help to make this a fun and rewarding meeting
for our Roanoke Valley Chapter. Donations are
needed for the silent auction. We already have
some very nice items and trips to be auctioned
off, but we need many more. This is a great
opportunity to promote your company, do some
Christmas shopping and raise money for the last
donation for 2005 to ensure our Chapter Champion
status.
Please contact me if you would like to volunteer
on the Foundation Committee.
Call me at 389-8979 with your silent auction
items and we will be happy to make arrangements
to pick them up.

SHRM Foundation Vision/Mission
The SHRM Foundation maximizes the impact of the HR profession on organizational decision-making and performance by promoting innovation, research, and the use of research-based knowledge.
For questions or additional information contact Donna Tatum at

Member Birthdays
See the Birthday List in the left column.
The Board thought it might be a nice idea to list member birthdays each month in the newsletter. If you see that it's a friend's birthday, feel free to send a card, make a phone call, or even bake a cake for that person! In order to start the birthday list idea, we need for all members to update their member profiles on the web site.
to go to the "Update Your Member Record" section
of the site. Your log-in is the first initial of your first name and your whole last name. The password is rvshrm. Click "Edit My Info" and your profile will pop up. Scroll down to enter your birth month and day. And, please check the accuracy of your other information as well. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Joy Hanson, Newsletter Editor, at
jhanson@rkeauthority.org
or 983-9216. Thank you.
