President's Message
by Mike Leach

Where were you when . . .

--The Soviet Union's Sputnik orbited the earth?
--John F. Kennedy was assassinated?
--Man first walked on the Moon?
--Saigon fell?
--America celebrated its 200th Birthday?
--You met Luke, Hans Solo, Princess Leia?
--Iran released the hostages?
--Charles and Diana were married?
--Roanoke flooded?
--Challenger exploded?
--The Wall came down?
--Kuwait was liberated?
--John Lennon died?
--Y2K arrived?
--The Towers fell?

We are often so engaged in the present and so anxious about the future that we spend little time reflecting on the past. When we do take the time to look backwards, it's often to chastise ourselves for something we did or didn't do.

We seldom invest much time in appreciating ourselves for what we have accomplished: The goals we have set and reached, the tragedies and trials we have overcome, the good judgements we have exercised, the times when we have lent our presence. Instead, when we take the time to reflect, we often bemoan the fact that we are not appreciated to the extent we should be.

Being appreciated by one's co-workers is a good thing; being appreciated by those one admires and respects is even better. But perhaps best of all is to know with confidence that we are valuable contributors to our family, friends, employer and community.

If we wait for someone to convince us of that truth, especially at work, we may be waiting a long time. In the current "jobless recovery", everyone is being expected to do more with less and produce results that are better than before. In such an environment, where expectations are high and stress is sometimes higher, there often is little time devoted to genuine expressions of appreciation.

That's ironic, because more often than not, time means more to us than almost any other expression of appreciation. Sure, money is helpful and trinkets interesting, but time for ourselves, time to share with others and time invested in us by others is, well . . . different.

Who among us has not has not looked back with appreciation upon a performance review that clearly reflected the investment of our supervisor's time, an occasion when a friend listened patiently to our excitement (or pain), or an unexpected opportunity to spend extra time on something meaningful to us? And who among us has not felt a deep sadness at the realization that we have wasted time?

Before we spend more time lamenting how seldom others spend time recognizing our contributions, let's devote some time to affirming those who make our work life more pleasant. Let's look around and admit that everyone with whom we interact probably shares our need to feel appreciated. And let's embrace the opportunity our roles often provide us to express appreciation.

At Advance, we have a cheer that goes like this: "How do you lead? From the front! When do you lead? All the time!" For the balance of this year, let's move to the front and take the lead in finding meaningful ways to say we appreciate these person's contributions, struggles and support.

PHRs & SPHRs
Everything You Need to Know About
Computer-Based Testing

Beginning in May 2004, the PHR and SPHR exams will be offered in a computer- based testing (CBT) format. Following is information about the new CBT program:

•  Exam content will not change. Mastering the HR body of knowledge continues to be the best way to prepare for exam success. The existing HRCI Certification Guide accurately outlines the test specifications and HR body of knowledge.
•  Computer-based testing was chosen in response to examinees' requests for consistent, stable testing environments; immediate results and greater choice in dates and locations.
•  The exams will still be offered twice a year. Instead of just one date per exam administration, an eight-week exam "window" will be available for each exam. The Spring/Summer PHR and SPHR exams may be taken between May 1 and June 30. The Fall/Winter exams may be taken between mid-November and mid-January.
•  Online exam registration procedures will not change significantly. Once candidates receive notification that they are eligible to take the exam, they will be directed by letter to schedule their exam at a Prometric test center near them. This may be done either online or by phone, and instructions will be included in the Admission-to-Test letter that they will receive. Candidates should definitely register and schedule their exams as early as possible, since the test centers also schedule test-takers for many other exams.
•  At the test center, candidates will be able to take a self-paced tutorial before starting the exam. The tutorial is designed to familiarize test-takers with the computer and show them how to read questions and indicate responses. The tutorial will not be counted in the four hours allotted to complete the exam.
•  A "virtual tour" of a Prometric test center is available online. The tutorial may be accessed through the "CBT Corner" of www.hrci.org.) The latest information about computer-based PHR and SPHR exams is found in the "CBT Corner" of the HRCI web site.
