President's
Message
by
Sarah Wilson
|
|
“ Behavior never lies. Most people want honesty as long as it is not honest. Most people want to improve as long as they don’t have to change”.
These nuggets of wisdom were presented by Richard Flint at the State Conference in Virginia Beach in September. I want to thank the chapter for sending me to represent Roanoke as your President. Dan Oyler, Donna Tatum, Debbie Honaker, Dan Semones and myself spent most of our time promoting the conference for 2006 here in Roanoke. Sponsors, participants, and presenters alike were anxious to talk with us about our plans.
Sue Meisinger, President and CEO for National SHRM was the keynote speaker on Sunday afternoon. Her message, like so many of her President’s messages in the HR Magazine, point out over and over that our profession really matters. She outlined five (5) competencies, and five (5) challenges. They are:
Competencies
1. Strategic contribution
2. Business Acumen
3. Personal Credibility
4. HR Delivery
5. HR Technology
Challenges
1. Rise in Health Care Cost
2. Focus on domestic and global safety/security
3. Use of technology for employee communications, e-learning, and to perform
transactional HR functions
4. Preparing for the next wave of retirement and labor shortages
5. Exporting of U.S. jobs to developing countries
Every month the local chapter focuses on at least one of these five competencies or five challenges. Yet month after month our membership meetings are under attended. Some months over the summer we had almost as many visitors as we had members. Do you feel that you are too busy to take the time out once a month to do something for your own career? How will you face the competencies that are required and the challenges that will need to be met without the knowledge and tools to do so? As I have said in this President’s message often over the last 10 months, you will ONLY get out of this YOUR PROFESSIONAL organization what YOU put into it. We have lots of committee work that needs to be done, especially to be able to put on a first class state conference in 2006. If you don’t know who to call, go to the web site, and call a Board Member and we can put you in touch with the right person, to get and keep you busy. I look forward to working with you.
Sarah L. Wilson, SPHR
President 2005

MINUTES FROM BOARD MEETING
September 20, 2005
Hotel Roanoke 10:45 a.m. – 11:45 am.
The following Board Members were in attendance:
Sharon Bowers, Charlotte Mason, Sandy Hamilton, Donna Moses, Donna Tatum, Debbie Honaker, Dan Oyler, Johna Campbell, Joyce Kessinger, Sarah Wilson, Barbara Phelps, David Wolfe (new Technology Chair), Matt Duffy, and Dan Semones.
Sarah Wilson, 2005 President, called the meeting to order.
Motion was made by Dan Oyler and seconded by Sharon Bowers to approve the August 23, 2005, Board Minutes. The motion was carried.
Debbie Honaker was asked to contact Kathy Claytor to secure an intern for the accounting project.
Joyce Kessinger presented the year-to-date 2005 attendance report. After much discussion and because of increases in Hotel meal prices, motion was made by Dan Oyler and seconded by Joyce Kessinger to raise the monthly meeting fees to $20 per member and $25 per guest effective January 1, 2006. The motion was carried. The membership will be notified in October.
Johna Campbell reported on future program meetings as follows:
September – Gary Ratliff, Dispute Resolution – Using the Peer Review Process
October – Steve Zimmerman, Career Planning for HR
November – Mel Asberry – Diversity
Motion was made by Sharon Bowers and seconded by Dan Oyler to present Mel Asberry with $500 for expenses for conducting the November meeting. The motion was passed.
Networking at today’s meeting will consist of exchanging business cards. A prize will be awarded for the person securing the most cards.
Donna Tatum presented the coaster samples, star notepads, letter openers and other promotional/marketing material that will be used for the State Conference.
Giveaways will include free registration to the 2006 State Conference and a PDA.
Our booth has been delayed because of logo problems but should be ready for the Conference. Joyce Kessinger or Barbara Phelps will supply needed easels for the Conference so we will not have to rent them.
Drawing for today will benefit the Katrina victims. Prizes will be brunch for two at Hotel Roanoke and a book by Marcus Buckingham.
Sharon Bowers asked Donna Tatum and her Marketing Committee to redesign the RVSHRM letterhead and envelopes.
A Silent Auction will be held in December with 50% of the proceeds going to the SHRM Foundation and 50% to offset costs of the December meeting. Members will be contacted for items for the Silent Auction.
Dan Semones announced the next 2006 State Conference planning meeting will be held October 14th.
Donna Moses reported 250 members with five new members since last month. Donna is being sent contact information for assessing joint billing issues with National SHRM. Debbie Honaker and Donna Tatum were asked to assist Donna with the conference calls on these joint billing issues. The Membership Committee’s next meeting date is October 11th. If we decide to go with joint billing, an audit of the membership will be performed after our cutoff date for membership (early 2006). Joint billing would then commence in May 2006. The Marketing Committee was also asked to create a logo for the joint billing. David Wolfe will investigate the possibility of downloading an Excel spreadsheet with membership information to our website.
David Wolfe was welcomed as the new Technology Committee Chair.
Dan Oyler reported that the golf tournament was cancelled due to lack of participants. We will try again in the Spring.
Sarah Wilson asked for the succession planning forms from anyone who has not submitted them. Sarah has developed a matrix for the next five years. Sharon Bowers, Debbie Honaker, Sarah Wilson and Bruce Wood will meet to discuss the succession planning.
Sarah Wilson announced that the President Chapter checklist is on target.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandy Hamilton
RVSHRM Secretary

Christmas, Fundraising and Fun!
Yes, we are having a Christmas gathering this year in December. A silent auction is planned as part of the festivities with the proceeds benefiting our Chapter and the SHRM Foundation. The Foundation Committee will be contacting members during the next few months to ask for donations of items to present at the auction. So, please be thinking about how you and your company can help make this a financially successful event.
The Foundation promotes research, innovation and the use of research-based knowledge. With an annual budget of approximately $1 million, it funds major research projects that have a direct and practical impact in advancing the HR profession.

Member Birthdays
See the Birthday List in the left column.
The Board thought it might be a nice idea to list member birthdays each month in the newsletter. If you see that it's a friend's birthday, feel free to send a card, make a phone call, or even bake a cake for that person! In order to start the birthday list idea, we need for all members to update their member profiles on the web site.
to go to the "Update Your Member Record" section
of the site. Your log-in is the first initial of your first name and your whole last name. The password is rvshrm. Click "Edit My Info" and your profile will pop up. Scroll down to enter your birth month and day. And, please check the accuracy of your other information as well. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Joy Hanson, Newsletter Editor, at
jhanson@rkeauthority.org
or 983-9216. Thank you.
