Thank you to all that
came to our September meeting sponsored by
Dixon, Hubard and Feinour, Inc. Special thanks
to David Camper and Molly Henry for coordinating
the speakers, along with the lunch and golf. It
was most enjoyable and extremely informative.
Well, the State Conference is over! As we have
heard from many participants, it was the best
yet! Our conference board and their committee
members worked on this conference for well over
a year and they deserve our thanks and
congratulations on a job well done! I believe
our last count was approximately 550, about 200
more than 4 years ago. The Roanoke Chapter has a
reputation for providing a topnotch conference,
so as a member, you should be very proud.
Again, congratulations and thank you to the
following, along with their committee members:
Dan Semones, Conference Chair
Coy Renick, Golf Tournament Chair
Barbara Phelps, Registration Chair
Joyce Kessinger, Arrangements Chair
Diane Casola, Program Chair
Donna Tatum, Marketing Chair
Dan Oyler and Anita Hassell, Sponsors/Exhibitors
Co-Chairs
Lauren Prada and Charlotte Mason, Door Prizes
Co-Chairs
Debbie Honaker, Treasurer
Matt Duffy, Photographer
Hope to see you all at the November meeting!
Sincerely,
Sharon Bowers

Board
Meeting Minutes
by Sandy Hamilton
|
|
SEPTEMBER 25, 2006 – Electronic Board
Meeting
Motion was made
by Sharon Bowers and seconded by Dan Oyler
to approve the Board Minutes of the August
22, 2006 meeting. The motion was carried.
Joyce Kessinger reported on the
arrangements. Joyce has spoken to the hotel
about our need for 60 minutes of
uninterrupted speaker time, and they can
accommodate this request. Coffee pots will
be left on the serving trays. Pitchers of
tea and water will be left on the tables for
refills. Dessert will be pre-set. They will
clear the room of wait staff at 12:30 pm. We
will probably have buffets or a combination
plate lunch the rest of the year.
Joyce will be unable to serve another year
as VP of Arrangements; however, she has
arrangements in a format that will not
present a problem for her successor. It
takes only an hour of her time each month.
The biggest objection to anyone agreeing to
serve is the commitment to be at
registration every month. For that reason, a
committee co-chairmen arrangement should
work easily even though it has never been a
problem to get someone to substitute/assist
with registration the day of the meeting.
Debbie Honaker has been as asset because she
always offers if she is going to be at the
meeting.
Sandy Hamilton reported she would be glad to
continue as Secretary for the next year if
needed in that position.
Lauren LaPrada reported that any interested
volunteers have been invited to a dinner at
Montanos next Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at
6:00 p.m. by Dr. Turner and William Byrd
High School. We will be discussing this
year’s program with the teachers and
volunteers. However, the meeting at Montanos
may have to be postponed due to a conflict
in dates. Lauren will advise if the meeting
is postponed.
Beth Pinson will be attending the launch of
the Commonwealth Scholars’ initiative
September 28th in Richmond. She will be
attending with William Byrd School’s “That
Work” program. We have also been asked to
head up an initiative at William Byrd Middle
School. The time commitment will be a little
bit different (one time/one hour commitment)
so there will be some options for those that
would like to volunteer but have a hard time
with the monthly commitment involved in the
current program. We will be discussing this
next Tuesday night as well.
Sharon Bowers asked Lauren LaPrada to look
into the Pinnacle Award information to see
if the work of the Workforce Readiness
Committee would qualify.
David Wolfe reported that NewVa Corridor
Technology Council (NCTC) is offering RVSHRM
members the NCTC Member discount to their
October 25th, Fall Membership Gala. The
speaker is Jason Ryan Dorsey who will talk
about overcoming the challenges of retaining
the Generation X and Y employees in an
organization and building a culture to
attract them.
Donna Tatum reported that we are on track to
earn Chapter Champion again this year. She
is working on a prize drawing tomorrow;
however, if it does not come through, a
50/50 drawing will be held. Donna asked
Johna Campbell for ideas on a Holiday
meeting and perhaps another silent auction.
Johna Campbell reported that the meetings
for the remainder of the year are as
follows:
October – State meeting takes the place of
the regular meeting.
November – Diversity meeting. Johna would
like to discuss the format of the program
with Debbie Reid.
December – Suggest an event similar to last
year’s – with a silent auction for the SHRM
foundation.
Johna also proposed that next year we move
the traditional diversity month earlier in
the year and combine November and December.
Those months are so busy that it is
difficult to get out to meetings. A
discussion on this should be held at the
next Board Meeting.
Johna is willing to serve on the Board again
next year but would like to pass the
position of programs on another person. She
would be glad to coach the new Chair.
There being no further business, the meeting
was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandy Hamilton, Secretary |

The State Conference
The State
Conference for the Society for Human
Resource Management was hosted by the
Roanoke Valley Chapter of SHRM and held
October 11th, 12th and 13th at the Hotel
Roanoke. A record number of over 550
participants attended the event (a record
for Roanoke). Most of those who attended
said it was one of the best conferences
ever. The Hotel was a great location for its
design, accommodations and great food. The
Program Committee did a great job of coming
up with very interesting topics and great
speakers from Jeanne Robertson to John Kemp.
Logistics from Registration to Entertainment
went great and provided many opportunities
for those attending to network. We had many
positive comments about the Exhibitors that
were there and the Sponsors who provided
many of the meals and Keynote speakers.
Please take a moment to thank the Planning
Committee Members for their hard work; they
are the ones who did a great job.

Foundation Committee
Thank you for your generosity and support
throughout this year to ensure our “Chapter
Champion” award for 2006.
Last year we all had a great time at the
December Christmas event; some members left with
wonderful gifts for under the tree or for
themselves from the silent auction that
benefited the SHRM Foundation. It was a time to
network, laugh and just be ourselves to
celebrate another great year.
Members, we need your help again this year.
Please let me know what items you will be
donating from your organizations. Remember, they
can be baskets of goodies from your company,
gift certificates from spas, restaurants,
services or items for Christmas gifts.
We do not have a date for the event yet, but I
would like to have items by the second week of
November. I can arrange to have them picked up.
Please pitch in and help, its good promotion for
your company and excellent support of your
membership in your local chapter.
I look forward to hearing from the membership
soon; I trust you will help make this a bigger
and more exciting event.
For donations, questions or ideas please call
Donna Tatum @ 540-389-8978 or e-mail @
donna.tatum@expresspersonnel.com.
Workforce Readiness Committee
The Workforce
Readiness Committee is currently planning for
the 2006/2007 school year. We will again be
offering sessions to homerooms at Wm Byrd HS and
starting a program at Wm Byrd Middle School as
well. We are currently looking for a date to
have our first meeting with the staff and
faculty of Wm Bryd to discuss the plans for this
years program. All past volunteers as well as
those interested in finding out more about
volunteering for this year will be invited.
Please keep an eye out for an email with the
date and other important information. Any
immediate questions can be sent to me at
lauren.prada@adeccona.com.
The Roanoke Chapter Sponsors Memberships
The Roanoke SHRM
Chapter will sponsor memberships for several HR
Professionals whose employers do not fund their
National and Local SHRM memberships. Through
these one-year memberships, the Chapter hopes to
better serve the community and to reach persons
engaged daily in the field of HR who may not
currently be participating in the either
organization.
Recipients of the Chapter-sponsored memberships
will be expected to pay their own fees for the
Chapter’s monthly luncheons and other events.
They will not be identified to Chapter members
as recipients of sponsored memberships.
Persons interested in applying for the one-year
membership should submit the following items as
soon as possible:
· Letter of interest, describing their current
position and the
benefits they hope to receive from National
and Local
SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer
that includes
confirmation their memberships will not be
employer-paid
If you are interested, please contact
Barbara Phelps. Funds available for this
new program are limited, so you are encouraged
to act promptly to ensure your request is fully
considered. |
