Managing Organizational Change – HR’s Greatest
Opportunity in the 21st Century

According to SHRM Workforce Forecast in 2006/07, 45% of HR Professionals believe that demonstrated skills in mergers, acquisitions and change management will have the greatest impact on human resource opportunities in the next decade.

Fifty percent of all organizations are currently going through different phases of organizational change, and up to half are deemed as failures due to lack of leadership, communication and trust of senior management. Human resource professionals are increasingly given the opportunity to take a leadership role in the change process and become the company’s change agent. We will discuss HR’s opportunity to lead all five types of today’s change initiatives. Company executives have now embraced HR’s leadership skills to manage key objectives requiring positive and thorough communication such as:

  • Mergers/Acquisitions
  • Arrival of new CEOs
  • Shaping of Company Culture
  • Manage Executive Development and Succession Planning To Provide a Fresh Perspective on Company Politics

We will discuss HR’s nine required competencies to effectively lead organizational change, including effectively managing the ever important trust and communication issues. HR must identify which leaders have the greatest credibility for trust building and which are considered trust busters.

This is HR’s greatest opportunity to sit at the big table and lead their companies through organizational change. The door is open, but we must take an aggressive approach with senior management to drive these programs to successful outcomes.

President's Message
by Barbara Phelps

If you did not attend the September meeting you missed a great program.  The guest speaker for our Annual CEO Breakfast was Debra C. (“Debbie”) Meade, President and Publisher of The Roanoke Times. Debbie shared lots of insights on her career and experiences with the Roanoke Times.  I was most interested in Debbie’s Human Resources experience and her perspective on leadership. As Debbie spoke about leadership she encouraged us as leaders to mentor and guide others within our organizations.
What better way to grow talent within your organization!

I wanted to pass this information on to you regarding recertification.

HRCI Recertification: Is It Time to Renew?

Once certified as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR), a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), or a Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR), you must recertify every 3 years (from date of original certification or last recertification).

  • Sixty (60) hours of learning credit is required during those 3 years
  • Credit earned on hour-for-hour basis (one hour learning = one hour recertification credit)
  • If you don’t submit recertification form, you must retake the exam
  • No supporting documentation should be submitted to HRCI, but should be maintained for your records in case you are audited
  • Recertification credits can be earned online at http://www.hrci.org/recertification/credits.html.
  • There are now two ways to recertify--by completing the paper application (available at www.hrci.org/Recertification/PDFAPP) or by accessing your online recertification file by clicking "My Recert File" at www.hrci.org

Credit is awarded for HR-related activities in these categories:

  • Continuing Education: Credit awarded hour for hour.  (Chapter meetings can be pre-approved for HRCI recertification credit.)  You can also obtain recertification credits through viewing SHRM’s archived or live webcasts.  There are over 100 available archived webcasts at www.shrm.org/webcast.  Each one counts for 1 credit.  There is no quiz at the end, and many count for strategic credit.
  • Instruction: 1 hour taught = 1.5 credit hours awarded.  (Includes courses taught at work such as workplace violence prevention, sexual harassment prevention, etc.)
  • On-the-Job Experience:  Credit is awarded for first-time work activity if it broadens your knowledge of the field of HR, such as developing a strategic plan, rolling out a new 401K plan, etc.
  • Research/Publishing: Research, write, or publish on HR topics.
  • Leadership: External leadership activities count, including being an SHRM volunteer leader.
  • Professional Membership: Be a member of a national HR-related professional association and earn credit hours.  (SHRM, ASTD, World at Work, etc.)
  • Answers to ALL your recertification questions can be found at www.hrci.org.
  • A recertification form can be found at www.hrci.org/Recertification/PDFAPP/.
  • HRCI now offers ONLINE storage of your certification documentation so you can complete the form as you go.
  • There is a $100 processing fee to recertify.
  • If you have changed jobs or addresses, notify HRCI (not just SHRM) at hrci@hrci.org
  • HRCI sends recertification reminders via email and regular mail, so they must have your current/correct email and mailing addresses.

Hope to see you in October

Barbara

Board Meeting Minutes
by Sandy Hamilton

SEPTEMBER 25, 2007
9:00 A.M. – 10:15 A.M.

The following Board Members were in attendance:
Debbie Reid, Barbara Phelps, Lauren Prada, Kim Carte, Michelle Glynn, Jeff VanDoren, Todd Leeson, Becky Reynolds, Donna Tatum, Debbie Honaker, Joy Hanson, Sandy Hamilton,  and Johna Campbell.

The meeting was called to order by Barbara Phelps, 2007 President.

Michelle Glynn reported that the Virginia Western Student Chapter is going well.  They are on track to charter the chapter.

Debbie Reid reported that the Diversity Committee would like to consider publishing an ethnic calendar for our members.  It was suggested that we reference the calendar on the National SHRM website.  This calendar could be a part of the newsletter.
Debbie also announced that we are actively recruiting guests in an effort to promote diversity.  Debbie proposed that we survey our membership regarding a variety of issues.  Data concerning demographics of our membership may be secured from National SHRM.  Purpose and results of survey should be communicated to our membership.  Board members were requested to review the list of proposed survey questions and give feedback to Debbie by October 15th.

Barbara Phelps suggested that we reconsider paying for one meeting for prospective members who are invited guests.

Becky Reynolds has identified 150 at-large members.  The chapter receives $6.25 for each member.  She has conducted an audit with National SHRM, and we have been paid for 207 members.  Becky and her 20 Committee members are actively identifying and calling prospective members in an effort to build membership.  Becky suggested that we consider giving retirees permanent member status and give active members in- transition free membership.  Criteria should be established for these retirees and members in-transition.  A decision on this matter was deferred until the next meeting.  Becky also mentioned the need for the membership to fulfill CAP requirements and advance our profession (examples:  making disaster preparedness and SPHR and PHR study materials available to members).  Question on this matter should be included in the survey of the membership.

It was unanimously agreed that scholarships should only be awarded to people interested in attending the meetings.

Debbie Honaker is to set up a money market account for State Conference funds.

Lauren Prada announced she is recruiting members for the Workforce Readiness Committee to take part in the new program at William Byrd.

Joy Hanson announced the cost for lunch at Hotel Roanoke has increased from $12.15 to $12.69/person.  The consensus was that rates should not be increased for 2008.  Paying for parking could be eliminated if necessary and sponsorship increased to make up for the increase in prices.  It was agreed that we change the meeting location in February (perhaps Hidden Valley Country Club).  The plan for a December social and silent auction needs to be made now.

Barbara Phelps suggested a new way of sending e-mails to Board Members for decisions:

  1. Person makes request to Board Members.
  2. Board Member only e-mails response back to person initiating the request.
  3. Person initiating request confers with President and decision is made based on Board Members’ responses.
  4. Decision is communicated to all Board Members

Barbara Phelps and Johna Campbell have begun work on the CAP.  CAP materials were distributed, and Board Members were requested to return materials to Barbara no later than October 15th.

The November Leadership Conference will be attended by Donna Tatum, Michelle Glynn and Johna Campbell.

Vacant offices for 2008 Board Members were discussed.  Lauren Prada would like to have someone succeed her for the 2008-2009 Workforce Readiness Committee.  Barbara suggested that all Board Members be prepared to recommend their successors.  Debbie Reid suggested having an at-large Board Member for training purposes

Donna Tatum announced that she has contacted Hotel Roanoke and VIR about the possibility of a gift in support of the West Virginia State Conference to be held in November.  She is still working on a third panel for the exhibit.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Sandy Hamilton, Secretary

13        Eid-Al-Fitr (Islamic, Muslim)

'Id Al-Fitr or Eid al-Fitr (Arabic for "Festival of the Breaking of the Fast") is one of Islam's two major festivals. It marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, and is celebrated during the first three days of the month of Shawwal.

The festival is distinguished by the performance of communal prayer (salat) at daybreak on its first day. It is a time of official receptions and private visits, when friends greet one another, presents are given, new clothes are worn, and the graves of relatives are visited. The traditional greeting for 'Id Al-Fitr is "'Id Mabarak" ("May God make it a blessed feast").

21        Diwali (Buddhist, Hindu)

Diwali is a five day Hindu festival which occurs on the fifteenth day of Kartika. Diwali means "rows of lighted lamps" and the celebration is often referred to as the Festival of Lights. During this time, homes are thoroughly cleaned and windows are opened to welcome Laksmi, goddess of wealth. Candles and lamps are lit as a greeting to Laksmi. Gifts are exchanged and festive meals are prepared during Diwali. The celebration means as much to Hindus as Christmas does to Christians.
