President's
Message
by
Sarah Wilson
|
|
All benefits should be on an equal playing field, was the message that Ab Boxley, President and CEO of Boxley, brought to our membership and their CEO guest at the annual CEO Breakfast in August. At times, tongue in cheek, his comments hit home with the CEO’s. As always the Hotel Roanoke did a wonderful job with the breakfast choices, and the networking was enjoyable. For those of you who were absent due to squeezing in that last minute vacation before school started, we hope to see you in September.
And speaking of September, please note that the meeting is one week earlier in the month to make accommodations for the State Conference in Virginia Beach.
At the Board meeting, a nominating committee was formed to start the process of identifying potential leaders for the 2006 slate of officers. If you are ask to serve please consider the following benefits of being a Volunteer Leader, you will;
· Develop a personal network of professionals and gain exposure to other
HR Professionals and Companies
· Up to date information on pending legislation
· A network of professional and specialist providing information that otherwise
would be difficult and or expensive to obtain
· Relationships and contacts in other companies to share problems,
concerns, and opportunities
· Recognition in the community as a professional committee to the
Human Resources profession
Again, as I have said many times, this is your organization, and you only get out of it what you put into it.
See you in September!
Sarah

“Joyce Kessinger could perhaps secure O. Winston Link Museum information which possibly could be used at the 2005 State Conference.” The motion was carried.
Dan Oyler reported that we need golf teams for the golf tournament on
September 12th. Employee Benefits Management will sponsor the lunch; we have two teams registered thus far and several hole sponsors. We are still seeking teams, sponsors and door prizes.
Dan Oyler reported that seven people are registered for the Professional Human Resource Management certification classes for Fall, 2005.
Debbie Honaker presented the year-to-date Budget vs. Actual expenses. A discussion was held regarding a proposed increase in monthly dues. Kathy Claytor is working on securing a Roanoke College intern to help Debbie with the Quick Books project.
Joyce Kessinger presented a proposal for the Pinnacle Award. The Roanoke City prison system needs volunteers to work with pre-release inmates to provide training on job skills, resumes, etc. Joyce, Debbie Honaker and Matt Duffy will meet with Tony Jones to further discuss this project, and Joyce will report the findings at a later Board Meeting.
Gary Ratcliff will be the September 20th guest speaker, and his topic will be Peer Review.
Donna Tatum reported the following marketing committee items:
1. 2005 State Conference booth is being assembled.
2. Promotional material (letter openers, notepads, and coasters) have been ordered.
3. Donations at the 2005 State Conference will go to the SHRM Foundation.

5. The December social meeting will start at 3:00 p.m. on either a Tuesday,

7. Postcards are being printed.
A motion was made by Matt Duffy and seconded by Bruce Wood that the December social meeting feature a Silent Auction and 50/50 drawing. The motion was carried.
Sarah Wilson announced that Busch Gardens will open at 2:00 p.m. prior to the 2005 State Conference and will be free to HR participants.
Sarah Wilson reported for Donna Moses that we currently have 244 members and that Donna is still pursuing the item of joint billing.
Sarah Wilson announced that six or seven people responded to our request for technology help. David Wolfe and Patti Dickerson will co-chair this committee.
Sarah Wilson reported that succession planning is ongoing. Our new slate of officers should be prepared as soon as possible. Debbie Honaker, Bruce Wood and Sarah Wilson will serve on the nominating committee.
Barbara Phelps announced that a survey for the VEC is scheduled to find out what skills can be taught in schools to better prepare students for the job force. She requested that RVSHRM participate in distributing this survey in conjunction with the Workforce Readiness Committee. Lauren Prada and Beth Pinson will coordinate this survey.
Sarah Wilson reminded us that Joy Hanson has had her baby and that newsletter items should be sent to Patti Dickerson.
Sarah Wilson notified us that Deborah Lovelace’s brother and sister-in-law were killed in a boating accident at Smith Mountain Lake, and she would send an appropriate card.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully Submitted,

Member Birthdays
See the Birthday List in the left column.
The Board thought it might be a nice idea to list member birthdays each month in the newsletter. If you see that it's a friend's birthday, feel free to send a card, make a phone call, or even bake a cake for that person! In order to start the birthday list idea, we need for all members to update their member profiles on the web site.
to go to the "Update Your Member Record" section
of the site. Your log-in is the first initial of your first name and your whole last name. The password is rvshrm. Click "Edit My Info" and your profile will pop up. Scroll down to enter your birth month and day. And, please check the accuracy of your other information as well. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Joy Hanson, Newsletter Editor, at
jhanson@rkeauthority.org
or 983-9216. Thank you.
