President's Message
by Sharon Bowers

It’s about a month away…the State Conference, that is! Have you registered? The committees have been working long and hard on this conference and I know it will be well worth your time and money. Don’t delay!

Thank you to all that braved the early morning and came to our annual CEO Breakfast. It was exciting to see so many there. Special thanks to our speaker, Ted Melnik, President of Novozymes. His review of the evolution of Novozymes and the challenges they faced during their rapid growth period were very exciting and informative. He listed some very good points concerning the acquisition of a company, such as:

1. Having a good opening day/week/month game plan.
2. Having a strong integration manager.
3. Having a strategy for people recruitment.
4. Gaining an understanding of the acquired company’s culture and getting them “on-board” with your company culture as soon as possible.
5. Remembering that it’s OK to say, “I don’t know”.
6. Also, remembering that your customer’s don’t care about the acquisition. They want their products on time and with no hassles, and finally,
7. Communicate and keep your staff informed of any changes.
8. We also appreciate his sharing of Novozymes ideas for a winning culture. I especially loved the idea of their company “Jamboree’s & Festoons”!

Hope to see you all at our September function. Remember, it begins at 9:30 AM at the Roanoke Country Club. A representative from the DOL will be speaking to us concerning Plan Investigations and Audits and Alliance Bernstein will continue with Increasing Plan Success. Dixon, Hubard & Feinour are sponsoring lunch and Captain’s Choice golf immediately following the meeting. Register by contacting David Camper at: camper@dhfinc.com or Molly Henry: henry@dhfinc.com (540-343-9903).

Look forward to seeing you all there!

Board Meeting Minutes
by Sandy Hamilton

MINUTES FROM BOARD MEETING
AUGUST 22, 2006
HOTEL ROANOKE 9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

The following Board Members were in attendance:
Sharon Bowers, Dan Oyler, Joyce Kessinger, Barbara Phelps, Matt Duffy,
Joy Hanson, Debbie Honaker, Donna Moses, Johna Campbell, and Sandy Hamilton.

Sharon Bowers, 2006 President, called the meeting to order.

Motion was made by Matt Duffy and seconded by Barbara Phelps to approve the minutes of the May 23, 2006, Board Meeting. The motion was carried.

Sharon Bowers gave Donna Moses a $1,300 check from National representing 212 members. Donna reported that 93% of our chapter is National members and that joint billing plans are still in progress. Dan Oyler is to review the by-laws for any rules that may affect the joint billing.

Dan Oyler announced that we need to review all by-laws before the end of the year. They will be reviewed by an attorney against state law. A vote will then be taken to approve the by-laws.

Board Members are invited to attend a webcast on August 24th, at 4:00 p.m. entitled “Branding and Marketing Your Chapter.” (www.shrm.org/virc/0806Aldrich.asp)
The webcast is one hour.

Board Members are asked to review the Superior Merit Award criteria notes that Sharon Bowers will forward to everyone. We need to be on target to maintain this award.

Johna Campbell announced that programs which qualify for HR certification must be 45 minutes long with 15 minutes allowed for questions. Joyce Kessinger was asked to explore the possibility of more buffets at the meetings to allow more time for programs.

Sharon Bowers mentioned that the work of the Workforce Readiness Committee may qualify for the Pinnacle Award. She will contact Lauren Prada.

Johna Campbell announced that we have been asked by Carolyn Fowler of HR Diversified Solutions (salary.com) to participate in a custom salary survey. Carolyn Fowler is in initial negotiations with the Chamber. After discussion, Board Members decided that we would announce the survey and let members decide whether or not to individually participate.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Sandy Hamilton, Secretary

Diversity Corner
by Debbie Reid

Diversity & RVSHRM

Take a moment at the next meeting to look around the room. How diverse is the membership in attendance? Do you think it accurately reflects the diversity of the human resource professional population in the Roanoke Valley? If not, why not?

As HR professionals, we have an obligation to the organizations we support to champion diversity. Business studies tell us that a diverse group is typically stronger and more innovative than a group of “look-alikes” – even with the challenges that accompany merging cultures. So what about our own organization? RVSHRM is a dynamic organization – it has been for a long time, but we know there are many local companies that are not represented, or are represented only on the membership roster. Many of us run into to people who don’t belong, or who don’t participate, for a variety of reasons. We can’t give them more time in their day, but we offer fine programs, excellent community outreach and valuable professional contacts. Do we practice what we preach in the area of diversity?

One of the goals of the Diversity Task Force is to increase the diversity of the Roanoke Valley SHRM chapter. This is a goal that we, as members, all share. First, make sure that you welcome and network with members at all levels of human resources and from all walks of life. Second, think of the companies, organizations and HR people that you know. Then, ask someone to join you, or invite a guest back. Third, if you have ideas of people or companies that we should recruit to enrich the diversity of our organization, let someone from our Task Force know. We all have Human Resources in common. We can only grow stronger by developing our differences!

Sharon Bowers, President RVSHRM, and Ted Melnik, President of Novozymes following the annual CEO Breakfast held in the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center. Mr. Melnik's presentation, "Growing a Company Culture as You Grow Your Business - a Novozymes Perspective" was fast paced, entertaining and highly informative.

The Roanoke Chapter Sponsors Memberships

The Roanoke SHRM Chapter will sponsor memberships for several HR Professionals whose employers do not fund their National and Local SHRM memberships. Through these one-year memberships, the Chapter hopes to better serve the community and to reach persons engaged daily in the field of HR who may not currently be participating in the either organization.

Recipients of the Chapter-sponsored memberships will be expected to pay their own fees for the Chapter’s monthly luncheons and other events. They will not be identified to Chapter members as recipients of sponsored memberships.

Persons interested in applying for the one-year membership should submit the following items as soon as possible:

· Letter of interest, describing their current position and the
benefits they hope to receive from National and Local
  SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer that includes
confirmation their memberships will not be employer-paid

If you are interested, please contact Barbara Phelps.  Funds available for this new program are limited, so you are encouraged to act promptly to ensure your request is fully considered.
